Surround system: some info

Hello, I'm thinking of making a surround system in my room.
I am undecided whether to put 6 speakers just over those 4,
without subwoofer.
In your opinion, how important is a subwoofer in a surround system?
Thanks for any advice.

PS: Can you suggest a good brand for 6 speakers withouth spending a lot of money (2 frontal speakers, 2 rear speakers 1 middle range speaker and 1 subwoofer?

E 'meglio se si utilizza google translate se si vuole ottenere una risposta alla tua domanda, non può essere grammaticalmente corrette, ma la maggior parte delle persone capirà cosa intendi.

Penso che sia un scelto personale.

And I think Google translate is a POS. (pezzo di merda)

If you type in "crush the blacks" it comes out (in Japanese at least) as something like "destroy the black people"

In fact it seems to always translate "blacks" as "Black People" and "whites" as "White People". You would be in "cacca profonda" if you posted the result without catching this small detail.

Re: Sistema surround: si puo' fare a meno del subwoofer?

It depends on the work you're doing. The answer may be different.

A subwoofer is important if you're mixing mixing projects for distribution in surround format. If your project contain no low frequency content, maybe it's not so important.

Low frequency content includes not only explosions and rumbles, but also quite a bit of the frequencies that an acoustic or electric bass, piano, organ, contra-bassoon, tympani, kick drum, and some other instruments put out.

Re: Sistema surround: si puo' fare a meno del subwoofer?

To mix surround correctly you need an LFE not just five speakers and a sub bass, the true spec for surround mixing means that all of the speakers should be full bandwidth as the LFE (low frequency effects) is designed to be used as and when required and not to just add a further octave on some smaller speakers response.

Personally I tend to mix 5.1 in a proper dubbing theatre but I do have a 2.1 system so that the sub bass adds a further octave to my dynaudio BM10 nearfield monitors.

Full surround mixing specs can be had from Dolby or in other manuals etc.

As a general rule true cinema surround sound has more to do with the mix room environment and the speaker set-ups for full Dolby 5.1 approval meet very stringent specs.
