And often the venues were designed with sound in mind, sometime 'old' theatres, churches and amphitheatres have a wonderful feeling when you stand in them and actually listen.

I respectfully disagree with #1 (I've seen some impressively large cathedrals in Europe that were built long before Lee DeForest); therefore, I think #2 must certainly be true. The presenters weren't trying to sound "intimate" to 500 or 1,000 people simultaneously.

We could get into a discussion of singers and auto-tune, but I fear I'm already teetering on the brink of OT. Mea culpa.

Re: Mic for indoor PA and live streaming?

They also didn't have congregations with hearing damage from an industrialized society and they didn't have to compete with traffic noise right out their window. I'm working in a building right at a 4-way intersection that has constant traffic including buses every few minutes. I also recall some churches when I was very young did not have a PA and the result was that nobody in the back could hear a thing. They just genuflected, sat, and stood with the people in the front rows and the sounds of the pipe organ providing the cues. Now, I am working on getting live streaming of video to work for people that can't get in to the temple. I'm doing almost by myself what used to take an entire TV station.
