was just looking into this right now myself. without an adapter you're kind of limited into what you can plug into an iphone because of the 4-pole TRRS headphone/mic jack and the lack of plug in power.
if you pick up one of these for $50 you can use any microphone you like: Tascam iXZ |

This could be a possibility too.
AR-4i | Audio Interface for iPhone 4 | Fostex Details are slim and the Fostex site acknowledges some problems with the iPhone 4S (but not the iPhone 4) but it seems to have a dedicate A/D converter so should provide better sound (and 2 channels) than devices using the phone's headset socket. I'm waiting for 4S bug and some reviews before deciding. |

as long as you don't mind being limited by the built in mics. personally, i'd prefer to have the option to use a mic of my own choosing.
also, at $120 you're not too far off from a Tascam DR-40 which are going for $150 at B&H right now, and has 48V phantom power and XLR inputs. |

The Fostex device can take external microphones, but not XLR.
It is a pity that Apple doesn't have USB audio device capability on the iPhone, the way it does on the iPad. If the need is for audio only, Ansel's suggestion of a separate, pocketable, device seems best. If it is to have good audio for video recording (say for citizen journalism projects) then we are a bit stuck for the moment. |

MicW do a great little mic. for the iPhone - available in omni, cardioid or hyper-cardioid. I'm thinking of getting the omni one myself for use with the sound level meter on the iPhone.
