Low volume on playback when recording using Onyx 1620, mic pre and layla 3G card

I'm using the onyx 1620 with the analog (not firewire card) going into the Layla 3G Echo, with a blue-tube pre. As a test I am routing the mic (dynamic) from the pre to the board to the layla for recording (in Goldwave but other recording software would pretty much be the same since it's nothing fancy). The levels seem ok, and the volume out of the speakers are good, but the recording volume on playback is very low, and I do not know exactly what I am doing wrong.

Actually, it just occured to me that I suspect it is the mic that is the problem. It's a generic brand and I had a similar issue on another computer. Feel free to chime in anyway just in case there is something I am missing.
