Yes. The preamps will be in your signal chain if you're using external mics with phantom and xlr.

Check out the links to Oade Bros. above, they have some alternative recorders as well as mods to the 660.

If you need advice on other recorders, you should start a new thread with info on what mics you'll be using to record what sources in what environment for what distribution.
