Stunt or not, I've seen instances as bizarre as this dealing with A/V company employees who "handle" corporate type seminars in NYC and elsewhere. Many do not understand the concept of level matching, if the plug fits, your good to go. Plugging a sub-mixer's line level out into the house mic-level input is routine rather than an exception. One "infamous" mid-town hotel on 7th Ave, uses $9.95 mics + cables from Parts Express. The installed system is probably as old as this once famous hotel.
OT, the guest rooms are worse than the ballrooms /meeting rooms unless you like bedbugs and rodents. (the hotel lobby is very nice though)
