The Beachtek will sit underneath the camera, which is a far better place for cables to be connected than on top of the camera.
I don't think that the Canon adapter has gain/line/mic controls either.
I went with the BeachTek and never regretted it.
I'm thinking of moving up a notch and getting the Beachtek DXA-8 with phantom power and pre-amps next...

I thought all the volume and gain controls are run through the gl2 once the ma-300 is connected to the accessory shoe, true?

Yes, it's just that you've got extra ones on the BeachTek as well as MIC/LINE switches. There's also a minijack input and a STEREO/MONO switch.

I bought MA300, cause i had nice mic to put on it. MA300 really looks cool on XM(GL)2, but that's all about it... it's only usable for connecting on-camera mic and handheld on short cables. Combination with self-powered AT837 and 10 metres of cable is in one word - catastrophy. One year later i am seriously considering to buy Beachtek DXA8 (Phantom, Line in, Gain).
