Excellent review in march's Electronic Musician
The review of 7 small diaphram condenser mics is very informative. The mics are all cardoid but the info would still have merit on the hypercardoid cousins. For example the shoeps came out on top for accuracy but the AT 4051a was very well received. Thje AT4053a is a pretty tight hypercard and just a capsule change away from the 4051. The sheops is $1200 and the AT is $400.
The mics covered were the AKG C480B/CK61 AT4051a Josephson C42 stereo pair Neumann KM184 Pearl TL66 Shoeps cmc6 mk4 THE KR2C There is also a pretty good article on Voice Over |

I'm sure we'll see something about it on-line as soon as it's officially March.
I'm guessing they don't release anything about the March issue in advance 'cause it would hurt newsstand sales. I'm gonna' pick up an issue today and I wouldn't if I could read it somewhere now. |

You can see it at emusician.com as of this morning... I just read it and it's a good read. Also the review suggests going to the archives to see another 8 small condenser test from 2000... Read both of those and you get a pretty good handle on 16 different small condenser mics.
The 2000 test includes info on the Oktavas too. It's pretty generous of EM to put this stuff on-line for us. In 20 minutes I got some good info on 3 mics I've been interested in; the Schoeps, Gefell m300, and the Oktava (for comparison). |
