Mixer as VU meter, what do you think?

Ok, so watching the little audio monitor on the XL1s sucks, right? And from what I've seen, portable VU meters are around $250, right? Well, my friend got a 8 channel mixer, sort of old school, for around $100. So I says to myself, I says, what if I picked up a cheap 4-channel mixer somewhere?

Well, how 'bout it? Do they make good VU meters?

uv- ussless valius

keep at mind that the uv will not give you actual right indication on the picks wich comming to your camera .
for right way to work with xl -1 that has very poor input stage ( mike lvel only (even there are rca inputs it s mike level ) )
you have to keep your peack not more then -35 dbu
befor the ato d conversion
the mitters on the xl wich show the digital scale are shoing volium after after it digitized and the potansiometers increas digial after a2d
so it might that you overload your preamp stage and still dont hit the digital zero
for proper work with that camera work with ppm miters on the mixer and calibrate your input stage about -20 dbfs ,keep the picks not over the -6dfs
the uv mitter show only the averege of whats happend and not the actual signal, the uv is mostly good when you are mastering to see the laudness of your product
