late in the game

Sorry if this is to late but if you are concerned about the quality you want to stay out of the line in unless you have the proper devices to make use of it,
Now I just tried this before I posted and I am still compressing But the first draft in FCP4 sounded okay I used an old sony camcorder soley for its mic and line out into line in into an XL1-s The line in is to record off a VCR or other device so I thougt it might work you may also have to toggle between your line in and mic line you will find this setting in "mode"
most likely. As I said it seams to work for what its worth I had the camera in the attic you may find one from a friend or who knows.
Best of luck.
