Room Tone placement

I've been putting room tone mainly between actors lines which works nicely. I heard also that some people put it on a seperate track. Im wondering how this would work since room tone already exists under the dialogue and basically, one would be doubling the amount of room tone. my understanding is to always place room tone inbetween lines and then have an ambience track (if necessary) on a seperate track.

thanks
