Internal/External Mic separation

Hi. If this kind of problem exists on other threads, sorry, I didn't find them. So I'm posting this new thread cause I experienced a problem with my HC1 camcorder. I connected a 1/8 to XLR adapter to the mic port and I set up the mic on Manual mode. I was surprise to see on the lcd that I still have signal from the camera mics. The level is about -40dB. Has anyone experienced something like this? Is there any way to fully separate the external mic from the internal?
