Making Live Sound, Sound Distant
Ok, I have this DVD background picture of this barn, which was where the wedding reception was held. I have a recording of the live band and want to put it as the audio on the DVD background.
I would like the audio to match, in hearing, the picture which was taken about 100 yards away. So, should I kill the bass etc, add reverb? Just looking for ideas. Thanks.

As soon as I hit the post button, I thought........maybe I'll add a cricket sound in or something, kill the bass etc.

Distant sounds are muted somewhat. Of course the level goes down. The details are reduced so that means the highs get rolled off.
Lower frequencies tend to travel farther than higher frequencies. And the barn walls would absorb the highs, too. One way is to do an actual test. Record someone shouting at close range. Then have that same person shout at a distance and see -- or hear -- the differences. Then make adjustments to mimic that result.

For the DVD menu -- start off with crickets. Then a minute later add a coyote. Then a frog. In 5 or 10 minutes end up with a cacophony of twilight animal sounds until you hear a gunshot and all goes quiet. :-)
It's like an audio "Easter Egg".
