Communications Failure Premiere Elements

Panasonic GS500.

Have captured from tape before several times via firewire and the computer does recognize the camera, but I get a communications failure message with VEgas Movie Studio and a "Date/Time recorded not found on tape and is required for scene detection" with Premiere Elements."

Does anyone have a clue as to where I can start to troubleshoot why I can't capture my video?
