Audio Clips Distorted When Imported to PP1.5

This issue may be old hat for Premiere Pro 1.5 users but I have just encountered it.

On two recent projects I attempted to import WAV audio files. According to the thick useless reading material that comes with Premiere, the software is supposed to handle a variety of audio files. However, when I import WAV or WMA files into a timeline, the audio clips suffer from pops or clicks and sometimes the very beginning of the clip is missing a a second or two or audio.

Any thoughts.

Is the WMA heavily compressed?
