New System for Adobe Suite

I am trying to decide which computer parts (PC) to upgrade for better HD 1080p editing and possible 4k editing. Hoping to get something that is good for at least 5 years.

I am using Adobe Suite 5.5.

What's a good graphics card? In the ones listed on adobe's website it tough to see which cards are current. I saw this article Building the Best PC for Video Editing and it mentions in the "Power Use Editing Build" a GTX 950 - does anyone know if that works with Adobe? Its not on the list.

Also thinking about the I7-6700 QUAD core processor

Advice would be welcomed!

Are you wanting to upgrade an existing system, or build new? Upgrades typically don't work out so well - component compatibility, performance bottlenecks in older parts of the system, and so on. And we don't know the specs of your current system.

For a minimum new edit system -

Z170 motherboard
Core i7 - 6700
SDD boot
GTX 1060/1070 graphics (the 950 is older generation)
32GB RAM
Fast, dedicated video storage (SATA drives, RAID perhaps internal or external)
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

EDIT: Just realized you are using much older Adobe software, don't even know if that will run on Windows 10. Recommend using Premiere CC with new system. The old software may not even recognize some of the newer camera formats, will have slower performance, etc.

I don't know about CS5.5 for sure, but all the CS6 suite programs work perfectly on a new system with an X99 series II motherboard, 6900K CPU and GTX980Ti GPU.

I am using Premiere, Encore, Audition, After Effects and Photoshop CS6, all of which work just as they should.

I still have Windows 7 and basically yeah everything will be upgraded except the hard drives I use.

I think the main question at this point is the graphics cards. Will unlisted graphics card work with Adobe?

The list online does not have very many, but maybe they don't use that list anymore????

Another question:

If I swap out everything except Hard drives, do I need to DEactivate my software first and then reactivate it?

Any particular reasons you are still on 5.5?

It seems like you're looking for something future proof and able to handle 4K but using software already 5 years old at this point. In terms of speed, just upgrading at least to CS6 and getting the Mercury engine and GPU enabled playback should be a major step up, apart from other camera support you may be missing.

Mainly because I am a cheap skate, but honestly there are not too many new things that would help my current workflow at the moment. I imagine in a few years when 4K is the mainstream fad then I'll upgrade. Just wanting to upgrade the system for now for a little extra tax write off this year.

Where do you get Adobe CS6 without going to a subscription? I have the same problem, but not excited about the subscription. Adobe 5.5 does not seem to manage 4k.
