HDV capture as .MOV on a mac?

Is there a way to do this? It's a pain, not to be able to view raw video in the preview.
Are the .XMP files important, or can they be deleted.

On a mac it is mov and not avi.
In the preferences you can uncheck Write XMP to files on import.

They are being saved as .mpeg. They work fine in all the Adobe aps, but show up black in preview and Quicktime player.

Found the checkbox for the XMP files, Thanks.
