Camcorder Presets or Premiere Effects?

Should I use my Canon XL2's color, sharpness, etc. presets? Or leave the presets at there default and use Premiere pro or After Effects to spice up my video instead?

I've always thought shoot raw and full res then add effects/lower res if required as you cant really make sd into hd and you can't remove camera effects post.
