Not Again
I am having random clips on the timeline replaced with different clips - but with the correct file name in Vegas pro 11 64bit. I had this problem a couple of revs ago, but it is back.
Sony Please don't give us any more new features until you fix what we have now! |
Re: Not Again
Yes, I had the same thing happen just yesterday.
Fortunately, I always save multiple copies of the project file. |
Re: Not Again
is this with the latest version?
if so it's a disgrace!!!! |
Re: Not Again
Yep, V11 build 595.
|
Re: Not Again
Yes build 545 and yes it is a disgrace
|
Re: Not Again
typo in last post.. build 595 not build 545
Boy do clients love it when clips start changing on their own. Thanks Sony |
Re: Not Again
Had this occur with me whilst editing a wedding for a client. Incredibly frustrating. How i dealt with it was to move the rushes with the effected clips to a new folder (try the desktop). Unfortunately reverting back to an old 'save' won't fix it and you'll have to edit it again, but with the rushes in a new location that file should not be effected any more (at least mine were okay after moving them). Only problem is a new clip can become affected at any time since no-one seems to know exactly how or why it occurs.

Re: Not Again
Has anyone got suggestions for this, 3 days of cutting a 4 hr project and now its just gone nuts,
different clips everywhere, even clips that arent even in the project, this is crazy. I opened up the auto saves from 5 hours ago that were fine when Vegas last closed, and they are screwed too. Please offer suggestions..... |
Re: Not Again
Gerald, first thing delete all of the SFK files and see if that helps. Probably won't but do it anyway.
The main thing to try is the following: 1. Copy your original folders and files to another hard drive. 2.Rename the original (NOT THE NEW COPY) folder with your clips. This is because you do not want Vegas to reference the original folder when you try this. 3.Then open your project, and Vegas will not find the video clips, so you will have to redirect it to look to the new hard drive location. See if that helps. This has happened to me in previous versions of Vegas. I honestly believe it is a Windows corruption issue of some kind, not a Vegas one. It has happened to me, as I said once or twice, is very aggravating, I know. I don't remember how I got past it. But I'm sure the above was the first step I took to fix it. Let us know what happens. |
Re: Not Again
thanks Jeff, will try first thing in the am, brain is fried now.
will report back, either success... or defection...... |
Re: Not Again
i think this is one of the main bugs that has me worried - i had it a couple of times in 10, and once in an early release of 11, but i now have 2 major projects coming up and to be perfectly honest, i don't think vegas is up to it any more.
it was exceptionally bad pr to have released 510/511with the line: 'Fixed an issue that could cause events to use the wrong media in certain circumstances (seen when project is later loaded).' and then have the same bug reappear in the following two point releases. obviously there's something seriously amiss with scs's quality control, and to sell 11 as a 'pro' tool is now nothing more than a bad joke. i have just ordered cs6, i don't want to leave vegas, but i'm not willing to take the risk of editing a complex major project with an nle that could at any moment simply lose the plot. |
Re: Not Again
Thanks for posting Leslie, I did't realize this was a known Vegas bug. Truly a bummer.

Re: Not Again
Jeff Harper said, "Thanks for posting Leslie, I did't realize this was a known Vegas bug. Truly a bummer."
It is a bug that only affects some users in that I and some others have never had it happen. There are those who have seen this a lot, those who have occasionally seen it and those like me who have never seen it. A suggestion might be certain Windows installs and updates may be causing it. For instance, SCS fixes the problem and it clears-up for a while then Microsoft sends out an update and the problem comes back and now SCS has to re-fix the problem. Or it might be the way one is naming their files. Or it might be that one starts their project in one location and then moves it to another. Or it might be in the Vegas settings. Or it might be the workflow. Or it might be whatever... I must be doing something right because I never have crashes with Vegas 11 or any of the other issues. Why? I do not know why I do not have problems and others do but I have seen posts where some have a lot of plug-ins and/or other input devices that have caused problems. The question is, how much of this is Vegas vs. something else? |
Re: Not Again
@ danny.
i'm very happy for you, seriously. i have been using vegas professionally since ver 4, and am still (hesitantly) using it now. my pc is a 'standard' machine, (not connected to the net, nor running anything else other than vegas, cs5 ps, and a few other audio / video programs. it is absolutely rock solid. however, this random replacement of files IS scs's problem - there's certainly enough people raising this problem on the various forums and ng's to negate any external factors, such as win updates, etc., this is nothing more than scs failing to correct a known bug - a not uncommon experience for the last few major releases.... |
Re: Not Again
Tried what Jeff suggested, no go, still a mess.
I have a theory though, There are three cams in the project that make .mts files, so three versions of 00001.mts 00002.mts and so on. Maybe ,even though they are in separate folders, Vegas loses the plot with the same file names? Anyway, I found a little program that batch renames whole folders- Rename files with A.F.5 took about 10 mins to rename everything to unique file names eg. gh2 sat crd1 1.mts (without spaces) being- cam=gh2, day=Sat, SD card=crd1, file number=1 gh2satcrd11.mts Its a theory, if it works, I'm good. If it goes south again.... I'm gone, Premiere here I come. |
Re: Not Again
Gerald, that makes sense, and might explain why I don't have the issue. I batch rename all video files while still on my the SD card. I don't believe I did that when I had the issue, which might explain things.
|
Re: Not Again
I never use the original 0001.mts, etc, names. I always rename camera one as C1 camera two as C2 and so on. Note: Shorter names.
Audio recorders are named as PA, Piano, etc. Names that tell me what they were actually used for instead of meaningless numbers. Vegas may be tripping over the zero's and causing the problems after one gets deep in the project. The SCS fix attempt was probably trying to correct that and it apparently did not work. So try renaming all of the events, videos and audios to something logical and see if that works. |
Re: Not Again
i've always renamed my files to 'sensible', non-complex, and clearly defined names ever since i can remember. hasn't stopped the odd media swap by vegas though....
|
Re: Not Again
Hmmm, that's unfortunate Leslie. Thought maybe we had a solution. Still makes sense to do the renaming thing, but I'm sorry it is not the answer.
|
Re: Not Again
Well I've been editing for 24hrs with the master project, and sequences from it.
No issues yet with the uniquely named files. I really thought that would have been it causing the problem. Cross my fingers. Interesting about new Premiere though, more Vegas features creeping in, just like FCPX. Premiere now has continuing playback while making adjustments. How do the other guys keep adding new features and remain solid ( well 5.5 was anyway ). Very keen to hear your feedback in few months Leslie ;) |
Re: Not Again
well i'm not giving up quite yet ;-)
1. i want to see what the next point release offers in vegas. i've been using it so long that working with it is second nature (EXCLUDING having to save every couple of minutes!). 2. i have a lot of money invested in plugins (though i can apparently transfer some across to cs6 - at a price) 3. i'm eavesdropping the cs6 boards BEFORE i do anything rash - no out of the frying pan into the fire!) so don't write me off quite yet ;-) ps. good luck with your project - just remember - keep saving!!! excalibur is great for this. oh! 4. i'd hate to lose excalibur and edward's wonderful, personal, support for it! |
Re: Not Again
Two of my pet peeves with Premier, as I remember it; I could not open multiple instances of PP at one time. I could not drag and drop files onto the timeline, I had to import footage through the PP interface. It just seemed so darned awkward to use, I hated it. Maybe it's better now, or improved in usability since CS3.
|
Re: Not Again
Hi guys, I can also confirm that this bug exists.
An unforgivable bug really. It doesn't happen often but still ... :( |
Re: Not Again
so, dl'ed latest release and see NO mention of this bug being fixed!
am running it now, and so far so good, but with amjor projects coming up in the next month or two there's absolutely no way i'm going to use vegas while this bug is unaccounted for! to that end i'm installing cs6 production bundle (bought at an educational discount). i'm not happy about the idea of leaving vegas (after 10 years of use), nor of having to learn another nle's idiosyncrasies, but since scs seems more intent adding (to me) useless features without fixing KNOWN bugs, then i have little alternative if i want a professional nle. |
Re: Not Again
Are you sure the actual media has changed and not just the representation (image of the file in "Project Media")? I've had that happen to on occasion, but it would never affect what was actually on the time line, and stopping and restarting Vegas would always fix it.
|
Re: Not Again
hi coral, appreciate the thought, but believe me, this is no way to edit. as for stop / starting vegas to get things (hopefully) back - vegas is supposed to be a professional nle!?
i used to praise vegas as loudly as i could, i would happily spend time with any of my students who wanted a bit more 'depth' to their knowledge of editing and using vegas. now, i'm scared that if i start a major project i might just end up loosing it in an instance, and that telling a student that 'it's a known bug' is some sort of lame excuse for their losing their work - no way.... |

Vegas has code that tries to reconnect if the media goes offline and then back online. I wonder if this media reconnection routine is causing the clip shuffling when AVCHD files have the same numerical names. |
Re: Not Again
Leslie,
I completely agree...starting and stopping your editor is no way to work with a professional NLE. My main point was to try and find out if the actual files/media clips were changing. That has never happened to me and routinely edit 3-camera wedding projects, but always give my .m2t files unique names (as Vegas says you should for multi-camera projects). Again, what I have seen once or twice is that the images (not the actual clips) I see in the Project Media area do not belong to the actual clips. But again, I agree that this is some type of bug and needs to be addressed for the type of money we are spending and reliance we place on "Professional NLE". |
Re: Not Again
I have a new variation of this problem now.. i will get a clip to act as if it were a transparency from time to time. the clip will not play, but if i delete the audio to it - the clip responds.
Never boring editing in Vegas, just one more work around to add to the LONG list. |
Re: Not Again
Well I should update,
I'm about 4 hrs in, long way to go still :( lol I haven't had an issue since using the unique file names. I have to admit this is about as far as I've ever pushed Vegas, Master projects with up to 5 cams on the timeline about 8 to 12hrs long, Pulling sequences of 3 to 10 mins from the master and editing in another instance of Vegas, AND having another instance of Vegas rendering a lot of the time as well. Yes I've had a few crashes, not many though. No failed renders. All in all, feels pretty solid. Never know what today will bring though :) Never know your luck in Vegas..... |
Re: Not Again
Everytime this has happened to me with Vegas 10 was when I had more than one instance of Vegas opened. I've been using 11 for a few months now with only a couple of crashes....no clip corruption, very disappointing to know this hasn't been fixed yet. I'll be holding my breath every time I open a project now.
|
Re: Not Again
Latest update,
I can confirm that the issue still happens with unique file names. :((((( One of my long master projects opened today totally screwed up, even had some family video in there that wasn't even in the project at all before, just a random clip left on my Desktop. This is not good. Would this work? If you synced your project folder to a back up and scheduled it to sync every day, then this problem arose, You then use the previous back up, would Vegas corrupt that too? or would you be good to go again? This is getting frustrating trying to second guess every way things can go wrong. :( |
Re: Not Again
Just wondering something after reading your post Gerald. Could it be a slightly corrupted file system?
What I am getting at is this, many things can cause a problem with the file system. Mainly when you remove power from the system due to a windows lockup, a power outage, a blue screen. Sometimes vegas crashes and I am wondering if people reboot their PC afterwards... Coming from a technical point of view, if my system crashes or a program crashes, I reboot the system. I don't trust that something is stuck in memory that can re-conflict with anything new you are doing. Now this is me, and I am no where near the editors that are using this board, but from a windows point of view maybe something that people might want to think about. Also if the system looses power, or has to be forced off, one should run a hard drive error check. Right click drive C: ( each hdd should be done ) properties, Tools, Error-checking, Check Now, Top check box clicked, Start. This wont be able to run while in windows, but on the next windows startup, it will go through and verify the files are not crosslinked etc. This might not have anything to do with Vegas screwing up in the way you mentioned as it could totally be a fault with vegas, but this is just regular windows maintenance and it can help prevent other/similar issues from happening. I hope it helps in some way or another... |
Re: Not Again
It's not a Windows problem; it's something in the project file itself. Older saved versions of the VEG files will not have the problem; they would if it were a Windows issue.
|
Re: Not Again
I thought it must be a Windows issue at first too, but there are too many people with the issue. I pray it doesn't strike me.

Re: Not Again
hi eric,
i don't think this media swap bug has anything to do with anything else other than some bad code somewhere that gets triggered by.... goodness knows what. in my case my system is perfectly stable, edits hdv with great ease, BUT occasionally (though very rarely) swaps media. i can assure you it does happen, and it's certainly a major show stopper for those that have experienced it. |

Just using the XMP profile on my motherboard. Last week though I was, 3930k at 4.5GHz. I got a blue screen of death while rendering so I set it back to defaults. But to be fair, I was rendering 2 x Vegas projects with Neat Video on both, and a HD to SD conversion in HD Link. The temps were ok last time I looked, but something fell over when I left the room for 5, came back to BSoD. I really cant see that the Vegas project swap issues are anything to do with Windows, My Windows SSD is just handling Windows, Project files are on separate drive, source files are on another 2 raid arrays, and I render to yet another drive. And my 1 min auto saves go to another separate drive. If Vegas cant keep its head sorted with different drives for every process of the project I dont know how I can make it any easier. Maybe an iMac.... 1x hard drive for all files.... as soon as they come out with a 10TB SSD, I'm there :) |

Re: Not Again
My work drives are kept clean. I have a T drive and a V drive. TV drives LOL!
T is for temp files and V is for video files. There is only one project and related files on my system at a time. All other projects and related files are on backup USB 3 drives that are offline while I edit. There are no available events and related files from other projects to replace the ones on my current active project. I hope this helps! |
