Mouse zoom wheel on timeline.
Splashed out on Windows 7 64bit and Vegas 9e but now can't get my mouse wheel to zoom in and out on my timeline - completely baffled - any help?
|
Hmmm
I'm on Win7 64 with 9e and can zoom with mouse.
Try another mouse from different manufacturer with different driver? Install mouse & kbd driver from manufacturers website? /m |
One point that annoys me (I so, so, so miss focus-follows-mouse) is that you do actually have to _click_ in the timeline area first... You sound like you might have had older versions, so perhaps this was obvious, but I just thought I'd mention it.
Secondly, I have a Logitech mouse/keyboard and when I allow the Logitech provided (and latest from their website) app to remain as a TSR, it completely screws up the mouse motion in Blender, and GIMP oddly enough. Kill it (or exit it) and things work perfectly fine. So maybe _removing_ the manufacturer provided software might be the answer. (did I mention I miss focus-follows-mouse?) =) |
I have VMS 9 and 10 running on Win7 32 bit, home built Q9400 / ASUS and my mouse wheel gets no response. I have tried three different Microsoft mouses, both PS2 and USB. Clicking in the timeline context makes no difference. It's not a show stopper, of course, but zooming in and out would be more efficient with the mouse wheel and I am disappointed that it doesn't work for me.

Mouse Problem
I'm having the exact same problem. I have a dual boot machine.
Vegas 9e Windows XP - mouse scroll wheel works fine for zooming on timeline. Vegas 9e 64 on Windows 7 64 bit - mouse scroll wheel works only occasionally as you spin the wheel Its a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 with the latest Win7-64 drivers. Very strange. I'm going to try another mouse, but that means another connection (the 6000 keyboard and mouse have an intergrated receiver). |
Same issue here,Win 7 64 and Vegas 9e 64, MS Arc mouse works fine, and with the same set of drivers blue led mouse don't, well, almost doesn't, you have to spin the wheel real hard and it's not precise,
|
bizarre, i run 64bit 7 and XP and have never seen this with any of my mouses/mice.
when someone works this one out it will be interesting. |
Nope, nothing I do fixes it - wireless lasermouse 5000.
It's damn frustrating, as zooming in and out on the timeline with the wheel is obviously an unnoticed significant part of my routine, because having to use the +/- is frustrating the living *insert expletive* out of me. Aaaaargh! |
hmmmmm, the plot thickens, I have the lasermouse 5000 as well......... no dramas.
|
Can't some of those mouse(s) be configured to have the wheel be scroll or zoom? I think different IDs for messages are even sent, so the app just never 'sees' a zoom.
In the configuration panel for it (either in the taskbar notification or control panel) is there any setting for scroll/zoom? Or maybe if you don't have the OEM driver installed, it defaults to scroll? |
Many years ago, many people mentioned this issue. The issue always turned out to be using the Logitec driver. Uninstalling the driver that came with the mouse and using the Windows built-in driver would solve the problem. Of course it also eliminated the use of the extra functions available on the mouse. So I would strongly suspect that it IS a driver issue.

No Logitech driver here.
I've just found a fix which is not satisfactory for me - I dug out a cheap ps2 $10 clunky mouse that I keep as a back-up and the wheel works perfectly. The problem is, that now I can't assign 'undo' to the wheel button. That's all I need - to be able to zoom the timeline with the wheel and undo with the wheel button. I've uninstalled all mouse drivers, disable/enabled etc and no luck. God is getting me back for all that porn. |
Still playing around with this mouse thing, I noticed something odd. First off, ALT-Scroll works for me as zoom as well as no ALT. Secondly, after using ALT, I find that the wheel handling gets screwed up, SHIFT, CTRL nor plain Scroll work, until I tap the ALT key again... A bit annoying, having to remember to tap the ALT key, but if ALT-Scroll works, seeing as your hand are likely near there, might be easier than the other options.

Due to not being a highly technical dude around drivers etc, I wonder if it is somthing to do with how Win7 handles USB in conjunction with Vegas?
|
I've tried the vanilla drivers with Win7 64 and the Intellipoint drivers from Microsoft. No difference, the scroll wheel only works if you really spin it and then not consistently when used on the time line.
It's interesting that it's only the time line in Vegas that has problems. Using the scroll wheel on say the explorer window or the transitions window works fine. I'm going to try another mosue (currently Microsoft Laser mouse 6000). |
Logitech M305 works fine,
|
It sounds like some of you have Microsoft mice, particularly the Laser mouse series that don't have a problem with the wheel. Could anyone who has it working post what mouse driver they are using?
I'd like to see if it works with my troublesome Laser Mouse 6000. |
I got tired of the lack of timeline zoom with my Micro$oft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000, found a Logitec wireless M505 on sale for $18.99 and now the timeline zoom works. No cord, four way scrolling and works properly. Recommended.

WELL You learn something new every day. I'd never heard of the mouse wheel effecting a zoom in and out on the timeline of Vegas, so I tried it using my VMS10 and it works perfectly. I am presuming that users of Windows 7 are the ones having this problem With XP there does not seem to be a problem. Perhaps the problem lies with microsoft and not Sony, But what do I know? I have only one major grumble with Sony as far as Vegas VMS10 is concerned and that is the help. It is very good once you know what their outlandish terms mean in Simple English. For example I wanted to know how to move the whole video track to the right without the clips(events in their jargon) overlapping each other. It was just sheer luck that I discovered it was called Slipping all takes (Not moving all events). No wonder the Forum is full of queries. If you examine the contents of most threads I think you will find that the majority are questions of how to do things and not complaints of faults. Thank God for this forum, without it I would have given up on Vegas long ago.

You would be presuming incorrectly. It's not a Windows error. It's a mouse driver error. The problem can also happen on XP. Using the wheel is a great way for quickly zooming in or out of the timeline - been using it for 10 years now! |
I stand corrected in my assumption. I made the assumption as nobody with XP seems to have reported the trouble on this forum. Fortunately I have not got the problem and I have tried three different mice(Mouses). I would be interested to know from XP users if they have had the problem and how they cured it, if at all.

It's interesting that a similar thread has been running in the Sony Vegas forum at:-
Sony Creative Software - Forums - Vegas Pro - Video Messages I'm using the Microsoft wireless mouse 5000 but have been unable to zoom in and out of the Timeline even though I have tried changing the mouse's properties shown in Control Panel. It's irritating as the mouse wheel used to make it so easy. Richard |
I've checked DVInfo, SCS forums and the Micro$oft support forums for several months. The problem is not consistent. Some folks have the problem with Micro$oft mice and some don't, no matter the hardware and software lineup. The Micro$oft mice are relegated to the junkbox.

Re: Mouse zoom wheel on timeline.
To complete my story, I've just bought another wireless mouse and this has solved the problem. Really annoying to be forced into doing this but at least this mouse does the zoom properly. Pity Microsoft couldn't get this right!

Re: Mouse zoom wheel on timeline.
I'm using the "MS Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000" and have the same problem. I've always used Logitech mouse in the past, and this is my first time trying another brand. Back to Logitech it is.

Re: Mouse zoom wheel on timeline.
I don't think anyone has mentioned if the scroll wheel is working ok in other applications, for example can you scroll internet explorer or any other window for that matter. If it does then it's obviously not an O/S, or mouse problem.

Re: Mouse zoom wheel on timeline.
Yes, the Microsoft Mousescroll wheel works OK in other applications which seems to be Peter Gries' experience as well (see above). So are you suggestiong that it's not a Microsoft or Mouse Driver problem but one that lies within Vegas?

Re: Mouse zoom wheel on timeline.
Hi Richard,
I can't see how it can be a mouse problem or O/S if the mouse works ok elsewhere. I can tell you that I have vegas 10c on xp and 10d on win 7 and my mouse scroll works fine on both systems, and yes it does zoom the timeline in vegas. Both mice are using the standard microsoft driver and both mice have "tails"! one is USB and one is PS2. So not sure what your problem is, strange that it's ok in windows and other applications, I would suspect vegas or something in vegas, a plugin maybe which is conflicting with the driver. If you are using intellipoint drivers I think there are different mouse profiles in the control panel, you could always try using the Basic Mouse setting. Regards Richard |
Re: Mouse zoom wheel on timeline.
Richard and Richard, I personally *DO* think it's a driver issue. Even if it works in other programs, it could still be a driver issue. Otherwise, why would ANY mouse work in Vegas?

Re: Mouse zoom wheel on timeline.
Hi Edward,
Must be an issue between driver and application, but not neccessarily the drivers fault. I just found this link, which makes interesting reading in particular method 5. Microsoft Mouse inconsistent behavior of scroll wheel and button - Microsoft Answers RichardG |

I should add that the scrolling didn't work in the "Event Pan/Crop" for "Workspace" either.
I just updated to MS IntelliPoint v8.1 and then tweaked the settings for the mouse wheel. Also added "Vegas" to the "Program Specific Settings" and to the "Identify programs that don't scroll correctly...". Odd that "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" are separate choices, with no option for the two combined such as "Zoom In/Out" as one would logically expect. However, either choice seems to work the same. Vegas doesn't seem to react when I first use the wheel, however each subsequent session it does. See attached screen shots for settings. |
