Since you seem keen on the same day concept have you considered a Firestore or similar device so that there's no need to capture tape at 1:1?

You can simply edit directly from the Firestore HDD.

While not directly related to your question, it's still an angle that is relevant and would speed things up for your same day business model.

Inside Vegas, do you render a seperate AC3 file for the audio? (And choose the right 5.1 template within the AC3 rendering).
And do yoy combine that AC3 file together with the MPEG2 file to make a dvd within DVD-Architect?

I'm working on a special report for a local news station and am trying to get some short clips from a dvd into vegas. If anyone can steer me in the right direction i would really appreciate it.

You can probably just drag the VOB file onto the timeline. However, you won't get audio if it was encoded as AC3. You can use software to convert the DVD back to AVI. However, my preferred method is to simply hook up the DVD player to my converter/camera/deck and just capture normally via firewire.

Yes. Render MPEG2 and AC3 (picking all appropriate settings) in Vegas.

Load the MPEG2 file in DVDA. If the files are named correctly it should automatically pick up the AC3 file. However, I would double-check to verify and change it if needed.

I agree with Ian. One (or more) of those devices would be perfect for a same-day edit. I would probably copy the files to the computer's hard drive but the copy process would be MUCH faster than the "capture" process.

Just a matter of picking File - Render As - AC3 as the format and then pick the correct preset and/or manually change the settings.

Thanks Edward! I will look at my manual and my Instant Vegas 5 book that I have and start learning how to use the two keyframes technique and then learn how to do the photo tricks. I'll have to find a sound effect of a camera shutter to use like they do on the show. I just love that effect. Thanks again!

Darrin - also make sure you use that AC3 stream for audio in DVDA. In other words, if your MPG has an audio file associated with it, it will drop on the timeline by default, and you'll have to replace it with the appropriate AC3 file instead.

In the future, render your MPEG2's as video-only to avoid this. Choose the appropriate "... video only for DVD Architect" preset in the drop-down menu.
