Vegas 5.0 Wish List

I recently read that NAB was introducing the new version of Vegas 5.0. Does anyone have any special wish list that have for the new version. I for one would like more 3d effects and the ability for nesting tracks.

Peter Koller March 11th, 2004 03:07 PM

-A decent mask tool! Rectangular and oval masks are a bit awkward for rotoscoping...

-Velocity envelopes that modify video PLUS audio. In V4 the envelope affects only the video events and leaves the audio track unchanged.

-Better region managment. I usually capture full tapes at once and create regions. I would like to be able to create folders and put regions of various files into them.

-HD support up to 2K. Realtime of course.

Well, it is a wish list after all:

-everything that After Effects and Combustion offers and Vegas doesn't. Most of all trackers and stabilizers.

Cheers, Peter

I second the Mask tool!!!! :)

Bin management that doesn't screw up!

Dylan Couper March 11th, 2004 07:37 PM

Mask tool.

Peter Jefferson March 12th, 2004 11:19 AM

a particle generator!!!!

hell, mainconcepts main actor5.1 has it...

for those who dont know, mainacotr are the ones who made the MPG codec for Vegas...

so.. i dont see why it couldnt be a possibility....

A new CG interface please.

Joe Carney March 15th, 2004 01:19 PM

Upgrade plug-in API to support DirectX 9, DirectX7 is way out of date. With DX9, it would be easier to write those particle and other 3d effects and take adavantage of your existing Hardware.

Also capture /edit support support for any DirectShow codec.
10bit color and higher support for all 2d and 3d effects.

Stay away from a proprietary plug-in API.

just my wishes.

Dylan Couper March 15th, 2004 09:08 PM

Oh, and a "Magic Film Look" button. :)

Adrian Douglas March 15th, 2004 09:19 PM

I'd like to see a more customizable interface or at least a way to emulate the look of Premiere. This would make it much easier for people coming from Premiere to get into Vegas. I've been using Premiere since 4.2 and can't get into the Vegas interface. I've got Vegas 4, which was given to me by a mate who bought a Mac, and I've played with it a bit but it feels kinda strange.

Edward Troxel March 15th, 2004 09:52 PM

Adrian, it really is very logical in it's approach. Think of it this way: Every track is identical! Naturally some only contain audio while some only contain video but they all behave exactly the same.

There ARE many differences in HOW they do things as well. For example, the "razor" tool is not needed - Vegas uses "S". The timeline is in a different position (top instead of bottom). The Beginner's Corner section of my newsletters attempt to present the basics to people new to Vegas.

Peter Jefferson March 16th, 2004 04:38 AM

forgot to mention...

you know how vegas track motion tool is pretty much the best there is.. well..

how about an anchorage stabiliser.. bit like pinnacle's???

now THIS would work.. hell i'm doing it now manually.. but it works a treat

Chris Hendrick March 16th, 2004 08:08 AM

Adrian,

I don't get it ... You can mod the Vegas interface quite a bit. They even put in the A/B roll interface of Premiere...

One of the best things I like about Vegas is that it has the Vegas interface... for SONY to waste their efforts on making Vegas more like Preimere is not a new feature that a lot of Vegas users want.

Premiere is Available for your system ... use it. It has the Premiere interface as well! :)

Chris

I would like to see smarter rendering of stills. When you render 10 seconds of a still that doesn't move and has no FX, Vegas should recognize that and just copy the frame the required number of times rather than rendering each duplicate frame.

I already does. I can watch the rendering of a scrapbook on my machine and, while panning occurs, you can see each frame count by. As soon as the panning stops, the counter moves so fast you can't read the numbers.

Sean Smith March 18th, 2004 10:20 AM

Better masking and faster rendering is a must.

I would like to have a feature that drops marker points while capturing live video. You can do this while recording with Sound Forge with a single click. This saves so much time during the editing. You go right to the markers to location the needed audio file. I would love to have this feature in Vegas 5.

Josh Bass March 18th, 2004 01:21 PM

A more FCP/Avid/Premiere-like scrub tool. What I mean is, let's say I want to find the exact frame of video where audio starts or stops (like in a dialogue sequence), I can use the arrow keys to scrub frame by frame until it goes from audio to silence, and you'd be able to hear the audio on each frame. I know people say "just buy the shuttle pro", but I don't wanna! I'm used to the mouse and keyboard.

Edward Troxel March 18th, 2004 10:13 PM

Vegas can scrub video in a variety of ways. No, it may not work exactly like FCP or Premiere but scrubbing is NOT a problem.

Ted Springer March 19th, 2004 12:21 AM

Can you advance frame by frame without clicking the mouse, but by pressing some button or another on the keyboard? That is important.

Dylan Couper March 19th, 2004 12:48 AM

You guys should check out DSE's book on Vegas.
Or read the manual. :)

Jerry Norman March 19th, 2004 06:14 AM

Ed, thanks for sharing this. Perhaps it is because I use Motion Blur that this doesn't happen for me. I will drop the blur to zero for the static portion and recheck.

<I already does. I can watch the rendering of a scrapbook on my machine and, while panning occurs, you can see each frame count by. As soon as the panning stops, the counter moves so fast you can't read the numbers. -->

Rob Lohman March 19th, 2004 06:16 AM

Yes you can Ted. The trick is to zoom in far enough in the timeline
so that the cursor keys move one frame at a time (I just verified
this on my Vegas installation).

For some quick starting information on Vegas:

Vegas shortcuts etc.
Edward's excellent tips

Edward Troxel March 19th, 2004 08:08 AM

<<<-- Originally posted by Ted Springer : Can you advance frame by frame without clicking the mouse, but by pressing some button or another on the keyboard? That is important. -->>>

Absolutely. There are at least three ways:

1) Zoom in on the timeline so that the arrow keys advance one frame at a time (arrow keys really move "one pixel" so you have to zoom in far enough that "one pixel" equates to one frame)

2) Hold down the ALT key while pressing the arrow keys. This will move you one frame no matter what the zoom level currently is.

3) Press F3 to move one frame left and F9 to move one frame right.

Josh Bass March 19th, 2004 01:45 PM

Sorry, I may have been unclear. I know how to advance the play head or cursor or johnson rod or whatever it's called frame by frame, what I don't know how to do is advance it frame by frame while it lets you hear the audio on each frame as you advance. Make more sense?

No shuttle pro for me. . .just another $100 for something I'd only need for one very specific purpose.

Edward Troxel March 19th, 2004 03:23 PM

Shuttle wouldn't help you anyway. It uses the F3 and F9 keys by default.

What I guess I don't understand is why you need to hear one frames worth of audio. It won't sound like anything intelligible. What purpose does it serve? How does it beat looking at the wave form? What benefit is there to it for me?

One thing you CAN do is set up a very small region and let the playback loop in that region. You can adjust the size of the region WHILE it continues playing.

Josh Bass March 19th, 2004 05:18 PM

Look, I'm not trying to start a huge argument here. All I'm saying is, there were times when I've been editing, and if I could split a track right before the audio starts, that would be helpful. Without enlarging the audio track visually so that I can see it, the easiest way to find out where audio goes to complete silence is by scrubbing. When I took my FCP class, this was something I did often.

Ted Springer March 19th, 2004 05:49 PM

I do this often in FCP as well. I guess you have to do it a few times and then get spoiled by the advantages it provides. Granted, it's not something that every editor needs, but I sure like it.

Glenn Chan March 19th, 2004 06:38 PM

Would be acceptable to:
Turn looping on (shortcut is q)
Select a small region, with the start where you think the edit should be.
Play the selection and adjust the beginning until it's right.

Ted Springer March 19th, 2004 07:11 PM

Or they could make it easy like it is in Final Cut Pro. I mean, we're talking Vegas 5 "wish lists" here, right?

Jerry Norman March 20th, 2004 05:01 AM

Edward, recall I asked for Vegas to recognize when a still isn't changing and to speed through the generation of those frames. I checked my assumption that it was my Motion Blur causing Vegas to generate each new frame the hard way but setting Motion Blur to zero didn't help. However, apparently the reason it is generating each "static" frame (and is so slooooow) is because the static frame is actually composted from 10 tracks. I think a better solution in the future would be to render a small segment of this to a new track and then expand the rendered clip for the 15 second segment that is "static".

I have actually done this before. It works great when you know nothing is going to change but, otherwise, would take a long time in rendering. I'm sure your reason was the composition of multiple tracks.

Emre Safak March 22nd, 2004 05:12 PM

Premiere plug-in support.

Better color correction tools. Take a look at Color Finesse ( http://www.synthetic-ap.com/products/cf/ ) or lustre ( http://www4.discreet.com/lustre/ ) to see how it should be done.

More "blending modes" (Photoshop-speak) especially Hue, Saturation, Luminance, and Color.

Aaron Koolen March 22nd, 2004 06:37 PM

All I ask for is a new mouse based timeline scrubbing mode that doesn't make a region...That's all... ;)

Although now I have the shuttlepro my mouse will probably get a lot less use.

Do any of you know of any links for more information on vegas 5.0?

Edward Troxel March 22nd, 2004 09:03 PM

Vegas 5 has not yet been officially announced. Once it is, I'm sure you will see plenty of information.

Joe Carney March 24th, 2004 08:32 PM

Network rendering is gonna be great (I heard about that before version 4 came out from a most unlikely source).
version 5 is already frozen so we should start thing about ver 6
MY real wish is...
I just hope Sony stays commited as the user comunity.
