Vegas and HD
 

I edit with FCP but may be moving to Vegas.

Are there differences in editing HD on Vegas or Vegas+DVD? Seems like I read where one is preferred to the other.

Vegas like Adobe Premiere has a plugin available for it from Cineform called Connect HD.

It provides you with a method of capture/convert and export back to tape.

It means you use tremendously less hard drive space.

If you are going to go from the Mac to the PC, I would recommend you take a look at the CineForm Web site on both products.

We also include a version of both plugins on our DVD (30 day versions) and copies of Vegas and Premiere Pro. You can try before you buy this way.

why would you not use FCP4? what can FCP4/shake not do?

There is no difference between Vegas and Vegas+DVD. Vegas is a stand alone program. The "+DVD" includes a program called DVD architect.

The GUI on vegas is much easier to learn from scratch than any other program. However, if you are already using FCP, it will look different to you. It will take you about a week to understand the workflow, and then after that,...I must say...everything is where you would guess it would be. Which I believe to be a sign of a great GUI. I am not here to start a FCP versus Vegas discussion, All I am saying is GUI in Vegas is quite good.

The whole apple versus pc thing is as played out as MC Hammer. I use both daily. There are only two differences between Mac and PC. Price and software. Find the software that you like and then buy the system. In most cases other than video, the software is made for both systems.

You know how if you go to different brand of ATM machines, they all look a little different and the buttons are in different places, .......same thing.

Mac's were better at this first, but now there is not much of a difference, if any. One is not better than the other, they are just different. One may look not as good to someone who is used to the other... I still use both today. I use pc more because I love Vegas.

I would go into the vegas forums on, well here of course, dmn, sony, and the cow and ask for feedback from people that have switched. They will let you know what you are in for, and if you will gain whatever it is you are looking for.

I also stress that we DON'T get involved in a PC vs. Apple debate here. There are some reasons why people dump PC for Apple and vice versa. It's a personal and also a professional thing for each editor.

can we split this into mac hdv editing ...pchdv editing . then everyone on the mac forum can tell each other how great there platform is and everyone on the pc can do the same ......the question was about vegas

I second the spliting of the Mac HDV editing and the PC HDV editing. Every post is either Mac or PC centric or they branch off in the middle causing a Mac vs. PC debate.
With all the announcements at NAB this will get even worse.

If you have access to a PC you could always try out the demo
of Vegas, ofcourse. But usually stick with what works for you
unless there are profound reasons to change it.

The only time I've ever changed an NLE was in mid-1999 when Adobe Premiere 5.1 almost destroyed my film, SKYE FALLING. I bought Final Cut Pro 1.0 and never looked back.

Just curiously, does Vegas have RT preview of video tracks? Multiple tracks?

One of the things that bummed me about Mac was how they've hamstrung their product so it doesn't allow as many tracks to be viewed RT as it easily could. I need as many as possible since I do alot of motion graphics on multiiple tracks and not having to render before viewing would be essential.
