My Iriver-790 doesn't change remaining time when switching between mono and stereo

I'm using Iriver IFP-790, I notice I get same remaining time on both mono and stereo mode. Do I need a mic like giant-squid specifically design for iriver to "trigger the mono mode" or theres something wrong with my unit?
