I build my own systems, and put as many HD's in the case that I can, one for windows, one for Adobe, one for other programs and one for storage.

I also have many external raid devices (Network) Even with the 1000 BBS network its pretty slow but ok for backing up photos.

What do you guys use for storing video, is there a system that you can actually work on video from an external device.

I am wondering if a esta backup array would be capable of doing this.

I built some esata external raid boxes ranging in 2 and 4 drive striped configurations on my mac, they work great and are more than enough for cutting hdv/dv. Very cheap nowadays to build too!

Any tips on how a non-IT type guy like me would go about doing this?

This may be of interest. Just make sure your MOBO can handle eSATA.

Great post and thanks, I just replaced my mobo and it has an external esata port. I use an external enclosure that is esata, but this is fantastic. as cheap as HD are, I will try one of them.

I started off by purchasing external FW800 drives when I found them on sale. After that got way to expensive, I decided to purchase 2 Drobos. The first one ran like a champ, but the 2nd one is having issues. I spoke with Drobo about the problems and was told I would receive a phone call from one of their engineers. That was two weeks ago.
I've since purchased a couple Vantec SATA docks. They have FW400, E-SATA and USB 2.0. You simply drop in a SATA HD, power on the unit and the drive appears. I've cut up some extra labels from used DV tapes so that I can label each drive. I usually make 2 copies, one for me and one for my editor.
So far I haven't had any trouble. I did find that the WD Green 1 TB drives work really well with it. I have some Seagate 32MB cache 1TB drives, but they were getting really warm in the unit.
