Adobe Encore Problem
 

I'm having trouble completing a dvd menu for a reception I've done. The video added to the project (via button) blacks out after 23 min. The project tab has the mpg file listed at 4.2 GB and 2h 16min. However, when I add the file to the reception button, the blackout occurs. I've tried transcoding the file but it only cuts out the empty video.

I would greatly appreciate any help someone can give me. Thanks in advance.

Update. I tried splitting the video in half. It works but I'd like to have the video as a whole if possible.

I had a similar problem. I ripped a DVD I created into an mpeg file and dropped it into Encore. The video and audio ended about 1/3 of the way through the video. I took the same mpeg and dropped it into the Nero DVD player and it worked fine. Same with WinDVD.

I then went back and re-ripped the disk. Same problem with Encore, but worked fine with the other two apps.

I never did figure out what the cause was as I went back to the edited master tape. That avi video worked fine in Encore.

A couple of points. There was no copy protection on the DVD as I created it from my own source material. Also, I ripped video from 17 other DVDs in the same series and all that worked fine.

My best guess is that there was something funny with the file one third of the way through the video. I never did examine the in the applications where it would play to see what the video was doing when it winked out.

One thing that can throw Encore off is timecode issues. The video itself might be OK but if the embedded metadata is off, Encore throws hands up while other authoring apps would not care.

I had similar issues ripping DVDs and in some cases had to import the mpeg file back into my NLE and re-encode (with the inherent quality loss) just to make it happen.

I use the program mpeg stream clip to quickly re-write bad time code issues :)

If that is the problem in your case.

MPEG Streamclip is a wonderful little program, helped me out quite a few times, but in the above example it was unable to fix the timecode issue. Although it reported fixed timecode, I was still unable to use the file... maybe there were other issues in addition to bad timecode.

I'm curious how the timecode could get corrupted. Any theories?

The tapes I was using were actually corrupted in some way. The video and sound become distorted at about the last 5 minutes of tape. I'm using Sony Premium MiniDV tapes. I bought them in bulk from an online store. I'm not even sure how many of the tapes are affected but many of them are. I'll have to remember to not record past 55min from now on.

I'm still have trouble outputing the video to dvd using Encore. It has been a real pain. I'm trying everything at this point. I may have to cut out the bad part of the video all together. For some reason only the audio was bad on one tape. I used the video and apparently it may be the cause of Encore's problem.
