Trond Saetre October 23rd, 2009 02:47 AM

Jonathan, stay with us! Don't give up yet.
How about making a video of the search for the "missing" animals, or something like that?
I hope to see your videos in future challenges. :)

Mike, good luck with your filming today. Hope the clouds and rain will cooperate with you.

Dale,
Nice shots you have there. :)

My entry is almost a wrap. Doing the final editing and VO this weekend.
This round has been rule 11 all the way. Fun fun.

Meryem Ersoz October 23rd, 2009 07:59 AM

keep in mind that file length is actually a 3-minute maximum - i've posted shorter ones, myself, more in the 2-minute range, Jonathan, so you could also consider a shorter entry before you decide to quit. the point is to tell a story or create an affect that fits the time that you have...

Mike Beckett October 23rd, 2009 10:10 AM

Well, there you go. I've spent all afternoon wandering around the shoreline looking for birds... and where the heck are they all!? This is supposed to be the peak season, with all the over-wintering birds!

I spent a lot of time in traffic queues behind tractors, doing 15mph, on tiny roads that you can't overtake on, chanting "remember rule 11, remember rule 11...".

I'll have to see what I can pull together with the footage I have already. "Dots in the distance", indeed!

Bob Thieda October 23rd, 2009 05:36 PM

Well I see I'm not alone....

Judging by the weather forecast for this weekend....I'm going to have to go with what I got.....
Which ain't much....LOL

Chris Swanberg October 23rd, 2009 10:11 PM

Well... my rough edit is done... with "rough" color grading. I'll have some time now for the voiceover and finish work... but will be competing with time on the long form as well. The long form without time limits spoils you.... I had a couple hours of footage easy enough for 10 minutes... but 3? Ouch... tough edit decisions.

My facility with Vegas has certainly improved as a result of all this - long form and UWOL 15! (And has a LONG ways yet to go)

Chris

Trond Saetre October 24th, 2009 08:13 AM

Mike,
If you have enough of those dots in the distance, maybe you can put them together and create an alien animal out of it. ;)

Meryem,
Is the upload instruction ready to be sent out yet?
(username/pw)

Mike Beckett October 24th, 2009 09:59 AM

Well, after a solid day editing, I might be able to make something of this after all - and to think, after yesterday's lack of wildlife I thought I was for the shark tank!

Trond - I think a lot of the time I was chasing specks of dirt on my glasses!

Bob Thieda October 25th, 2009 08:08 AM

Mother Nature is such a bi...... ah hem, tease....

In spite of the weather forecast, the sun came out this morning...
So I packed up my stuff and made the 10 minute drive to the spot I was using hoping for one last chance to shoot some actual moving creatures....

Of course two minutes from my destination....the cloud cover rolled back in, it got dark and looked to rain any second...
Looked around a bit, took a couple of shots...no wildlife though....oh well...
Looks like I'll use what I have...

Dale Guthormsen October 25th, 2009 09:26 AM

Good Morning,

Looks like The weather has challenged everyone this round.

I have several shots to make yet but really would like an above freezing Low wind cloudless day to get them. I am going to shoot them tomarrow in whatever we have, then reshoot this week if the weather breaks!! I need to get editing!!, write a script and make the voice over. Wait a minute, that is almost everything!!!

I am working at rule 11, I ofthen think, "Remeber Dale, have fun!! Oh yea!!!!"

Looking forward to the entries!!!

Rich Ryan October 25th, 2009 04:14 PM

Well I guess I am going to need to settle for one species. I have plenty of footage, so I can string something together. I have a rough edit and some notes for a voice over, but still need to finalize the script, cleanup the editing, and add a little music. But at least I have some footage to work with.

Chris Swanberg October 25th, 2009 04:36 PM

Well... early for once. I uploaded my entry this afternoon. I had a little trouble getting it under the 60mb limit.... but on the 3rd try managed it. Since it has some graphics, I KNOW it will do better on the feedback thread post in youtube or vimeo at a higher res. That will, of course, have to wait.

Now... back to long form.

Chris S.

Trond Saetre October 25th, 2009 10:40 PM

Chris,
How could you upload to the uwol website?
Have you received the upload username/password yet?
Could you forward the details to me?

Meryem Ersoz October 26th, 2009 09:43 AM

Trond, you should have an email with uploading instructions. You can also look it up in an old email, if you have one. We have not changed it in a while.

Trond Saetre October 26th, 2009 11:09 AM

Meryem,
I got the mail today, thanks.
And I also got the info from Chris yesterday. Thank you Chris!

(Have to remind myself not to delete those emails after I have uploaded the videos)

Kevin Railsback October 26th, 2009 12:37 PM

My wife had some fairly serious surgery last Monday and she wasn't recovering as fast as we hoped. So, I've been home taking care of her to make sure she's ok.

She turned the corner finally so if she's ok in the morning I might try to get out for a couple hours. She'll probably be glad to get me out of the house for a couple hours. I think she's tired of me asking if I can get her anything. :)

Trond Saetre October 26th, 2009 03:25 PM

Kevin, all the best for your wife. Hope for a quick recovery.

Mike Beckett October 26th, 2009 03:40 PM

Hopefully Mrs Kevin is on the mend now. There's only so much TLC she can take, I'm sure! Fingers crossed for you both.

...

Well my film is almost complete... sound almost there, everything lined up, voiceover complete, music in. So that gives me until Friday night to mess around with colour correcting and final tweaks. Given that I can't colour correct to save my life, this isn't at all scary.

Alas, my sound is lacking, and I have no real close-ups. I mistakenly thought "I can get those close-ups and good sound later", but it was not to be. Still, I've managed to put something together that I think fits the topic. And it's been a blast!

Bob Thieda October 27th, 2009 07:21 AM

Kevin...best wishes for the Mrs.

OK gang...here's a tip...

Don't install a new SSD drive and a new OS, (win7), the weekend before the challenge ends....
What was I thinking....???

Just got everything going good again...
(Jake at Cineform was nice enough to issue me a new key after I wiped my old system without deactivating my copy of NeoScene...Thanks a bunch!)

Now I can finish up...have to stretch the theme a bit, but it's all I got... :)
Oh...and doing VOs with a stuffed up nose...ha...

Sam Mendolia October 27th, 2009 12:22 PM

I am still on Rule #11.

Got something put together, and actually somewhat edited.

Just like Bob, don't mess with the computer.
In my case, my harddrive was giving me grief. I kept blaming the external hardware, and chucked the lot out.
I hadn't used it in a while, so I won't miss it.

My server died, and no amount of troubleshooting, was going to revive it- time to build a new one, when I have some time.

the one external harddrive case still working, has my edited footage on it.

There won't be time for colour correcting, which I know I really wanted to do, as I look back at others, previous videos entered here and elsewhere.

I really need to make time to practice a lot of what I have seen.

For me right now, I am just happy to have started and hopefully finish, before the deadline.

Now I have to choose some appropriate music, no VO, as I am not very good at getting those thoughts out yet, in an intelligible manner- I need a script writting course.

keeping my fingers crossed, and wishing those of you who are not yet finished, good luck!

sam

Geir Inge October 28th, 2009 04:56 AM

OK.
I'm not sure that I'll manage to make something for Uwol#15.
Time is running out on me, so maybe I'll just keep my eyes on my upcoming exam (4th nov) and ULF. I'll decide tomorrow.

Best wishes to you Kevin and your Mrs.

Geir Inge

Trond Saetre October 28th, 2009 08:33 AM

Good luck with the exam, Geir Inge!
Hope you still have some time to make something for UWOL15.

Mike Beckett October 28th, 2009 09:03 AM

Geir Inge, the man whose work inspired me to first enter UWOL after months of indecision! We must see a film from you!

Seriously, good luck with the exam. I don't suppose there's any rule #11 when studying for that!

Mike Beckett October 28th, 2009 04:03 PM

Well I have a finished video, but as usual, the rendering is stuffing me up. In this case, a strange buzz/clicking on the finished video that I don't get in Premiere on in any of the audio tracks.

Technology always seems to get in the way! (Maybe that should be rule #12...)

Rich Ryan October 28th, 2009 10:30 PM

Kevin, best wishes to the Mrs. Hope things have worked out for both of you.

Geir Inge - we all look forward to an entry from you.

Mike - I hear your pain. I had issues getting my video to render correctly, but finally got it all worked out and uploaded.

Good luck to the rest of the procrastinators (-:

Meryem Ersoz October 28th, 2009 10:31 PM

Tell your wife that the UWOLers are wishing her a speedy recovery...

18 inches of snowfall here since last night, expecting 12-16 more, whoa!

Chris Swanberg October 28th, 2009 10:59 PM

Meryem, if my time there in college for 4 years is still a valid indicator, that is a HUGE snow for Boulder !

Bob Thieda October 29th, 2009 05:25 AM

Done! And uploaded last night....

Kevin Railsback October 29th, 2009 06:39 AM

I'll try to do an upload list today sometime if Angi is doing ok this morning.

Sam Mendolia October 29th, 2009 08:01 AM

Okay, I am done, with what I have.
It is uplaoding as I write.

Rendering has been an issue, I have tried three different computers, numerous compression prgrams, and quality.

Premiere Pro2 is giving me the worst looking video ever, once it is compressed.

Premeire 6.5, my favorite, gives me the best, but, there is something happening on the right side of the screen, that I cannot get rid of.
It was there the last entry, but managed to get rid of it, but cannot now.

So, my aim was to get something started, edited and uploaded.

Rule #11 was adhered to at all times......

Sam

Mike Beckett October 29th, 2009 03:47 PM

Uploaded, as best as I can. I do wish for a computer that worked, but it's rendered as well as I could manage within the limits.

Now I can relax for a while, it's all over...

Good luck to everyone else!

Kevin Railsback October 29th, 2009 10:29 PM

Tomorrow's going to be a busy day for me.

My wife had some complications from her surgery so my plans to get out this week were put aside to make sure she was ok.

We're thinking I can get away for a couple hours to go shoot and try to get something in.

I've got a bit of footage but need more to even put the most basic submission together.

Weather is supposed to be clearing so we'll see.

Hate to end the year in the shark tank!

Geir Inge October 30th, 2009 05:55 AM

Ok.
Yesterday I went a trip out on Kvamsoy island, slept over (my parrents still lives there), did some more filming today and now I've finfished editing. Well, that is if you can call it editing :/
Just put some shots together, some music and a little bit VO.
No color correction or stuff like that.
My main comment for this is: "No good for Uwol".
Still, I will upload my entry tonight.
Now it's on to work.

Geir Inge

Sam Mendolia October 30th, 2009 09:09 AM

Geir I hear you when you say "My main comment for this is: "No good for Uwol"."

That is exactly how I feel about my submission.

Best of luck to us all.

Sam Mendolia

Bill Thesken October 30th, 2009 03:32 PM

Dang, I deleted the e-mail with the uploading instructions, but I e-mailed Meryam, so hopefully I'll get the password soon..........

Bill Thesken October 30th, 2009 03:57 PM

In the event that Meryam is unavailable to e-mail me the password for the UWOL site, is there anyone else who could? Thank you!

Trond Saetre October 30th, 2009 04:11 PM

Bill, what is your email? I can't find it here.
I'll forward the username and pw to you.

Bill Thesken October 30th, 2009 06:03 PM

Thanks Trond, Meryam e-mailed me the password so I'm good to go. -BT

Chris Swanberg October 30th, 2009 06:44 PM

Geir -

Your standards are high and your work reflects that comittment... your "No good for UWOL" will still probably be really enjoyable to view, and likely downright terrific!

Best of luck next week on your exams.

Chris Swanberg
