Prefered video codec/format for next-generation video games?
What codec/format do you think would be ideal for pre-rendered scenes in 720p and/or even 1080p? H.264? VC-1? or the good ol' MPEG-2?
And no one's been answering my threads recently so there better be a viable discussion going on here. |
Assuming you are going to be putting it on BR or HD-DVD, I would use MPEG-2, since it requires less CPU muscle. If space is an issue, I would consider VC-1 or H.264. So there you have it...

Ah, so it is most likely that "Resistance: Fall of Man" uses 720p MPEG-2 files.
and all the game data in that game totals 22GB. |
It was originally going to be 1080p but that would have been a lot of work so they decided to do 720p.
Even Virtua Fighter 5, the game that I want will be at 720p. NBA 07, Full Auto 2, Virtua Tennis 3 and Gran Turismo 4 will be on 1080p. I’m praying that Namco releases Tekken 6 on 1080p. Their may be others but at the moment I can’t remember. Just as I suspected, only a few games will be on 1080p but I hope that will change soon. |

It’s bad enough as it is comparing 9 gigs to 50 gigs and it will be an embarrassment comparing 9 gigs to 200 gigs. |
