The quiz kinda made me feel like someone had opened the window and I just fell out. But, it did put more things in the first pane (fun teaching tool) and it also reinforced just how LARGE the fourth pane is for me, which was probably why that film school was offering it. Dang, suckered in by another brilliant marketing strategy.

Ouch...42. Do I need to go back to school?

Charles Papert July 24th, 2005 10:42 AM

One of the courses "recommended" to me at the end of that quiz was the Steadicam workshop, which is mildly amusing in that I used to help teach that particular class there in the mid 90's.

Whether or not all of the questions are properly phrased etc., I will say that the Rockport workshops are a great experience and unlike many film schools, all of the instructors are working professionals in their field. It's a great immersion into filmmaking, and an excellent environment, like summer camp for adults!

Tom Wills July 24th, 2005 01:14 PM

I took it a while ago and got in the high 60s, and I've never been to film school. Hell, I'm 15!

Even I'm confused by how well I did.

Charles Papert July 24th, 2005 04:03 PM

What th'--15??! That's...something else.

OK Tom, if you're THAT good, here's a couple more for you--and no looking up the answers elsewhere! (everyone else, feel free to take a whack!)

4) What is the exposure compensation for an 85N.9 filter:

a) 3 1/3 stops

9) Bonus: which modern motion picture camera was named after a woman that worked in the shipping department at the factory?

Tom Wills July 24th, 2005 04:14 PM

My best answers... Wasn't sure on 6, so left it blank. 9 I have no clue whatsoever on.

Let's see how much I know.

You think my age is odd Charles? I've never touched a film camera beyond Super8. I have a ton of knowledge though, because my father has taught me everything he knows, and he is an emmy award winning cameraman who shot 16mm, 35mm, S35, one of the first ENG cameras (RCA with a beltpack recorder), and everything up to DVCPro and MiniDV today. He worked for around 10 TV stations, and then moved on to Evening Magazine, and was one of their main cameramen, where he won his 2 Emmys and a Gabriel.

I just did that from memory. I even scare myself sometimes.

By the way, I redid the test today and got 63. I was able to do it in under 10 minutes though, so I count that as an accomplishment.

Yi Fong Yu July 24th, 2005 04:37 PM

tom, having him for a Dad, that's like... cheating ;).

Charles Papert July 24th, 2005 04:43 PM

I think it's fantastic that you have such a good memory Tom, and actually I had guessed that perhaps you came from a film family with that much knowledge under your belt! I was just a little stunned that a 15 yr old would get the DVI high score on the Rockport quiz...!

Unfortunately--not so good on mine, I'll admit it's pretty tough (I purposely mixed in some historical stuff with the pure technical). Only 1 right.

I'll keep the answers under my belt for a little bit, let the others have a go at this.

I'm not surprised I got more than a few wrong on yours. Those were incredibly tough (note the "best answers" aka "my best guess" on most of them). I'm not concerned though, because I obviously have a ton of time to learn more.

I'm still trying to become an AC on film shoots around here though. DV may be my forte, but I really need some film experience to make it as a DP.

Thanks for being an inspiration to me Charles, your work has truly made me push myself to an even higher level. Now if only I could be one of your ACs... Heh...

Krystian Ramlogan July 24th, 2005 06:45 PM

Ok, this is way hard. I'm not sure if I'm gonna get even one right but here are my guesses:

1. D
2. No clue
3. B
4. C
5. A
6. C
7. No clue
8. A
9. No clue

I can't wait to see what the correct answers are, I'm sure I'll feel really good if I get a couple right. But I know one thing, you sure can learn a lot on this board man. :-)

Charles Papert July 24th, 2005 09:54 PM

3 right, Krystian.

Hey 3 correct, alright! I did suspect my answer for depth of field should have been shutter/iris ramp but I submitted my first answer too quickly - ah, overconfidence...sucks sometimes ;-)

I'm feeling pretty good about those I got correct though and I'm gonna write these down and quiz my fellow students next semester man, show off on them :-)

Obviously I have tons to learn yet. Thanks for the quiz Charles!

Charles Papert July 25th, 2005 10:43 AM

That's cool Krystian, my DP friend who I mentioned earlier in the thread got that one wrong also (he didn't read it thoroughly enough). He got 7 of 9 correct though, which does lead me to believe that the quiz is not that hard compared to the Rockport one, perhaps a bit more oriented to people who are in the film industry (except for the reciprocity failure question, which is sort of obscure--that's the other one he got wrong).
