is the red-one still a good choice?
 

is the red one still a good choice for making a film? is there anything that has came out since then that is cheaper and just as good?

also does the red take a while to get used to shooting with?

Red is still very good! Arri just released a cam called Alexa which is somewhat similar to Redone, how ever no announcments to my knowledge from red on any other products.

Panasonic just also introduced the ag-af100 I believe thats what the model is which is a cross between a camcorder and a DSLR available in december which you would like to also look into see if thats what might be your thing..

beside that DSLR's are really making things happen in todays world.

Yes, lots of film are being shot with RED One's. There is a new sensor upgrade, the MX available, which is a big improvement. No there currently isn't anything cheaper and just as good, but which camera you may decide to use will depend on the market you are aiming at.

The Epic prototype has been at NAB, but this is a more expensive camera than the RED One.

You have to learn the RED work flows, cameras crews used to working with 35mm film cameras don't seem to have real problems once data handling is in place, but if you're used to consumer or prosumer cameras there are quite a few differences.

I wouldn't worry about the camera and more about your film, the RED One will be very capable for a number of years.
