7D in South America - Get Travel Insurance?

I am tempted to bring my 7D to Ecuador tomorrow but really concerned about the crime rates there. Should I get insurance or just bring my crummy point and shoot?

It's not for business but would really like to take my SLR if I get some piece of mind.

Thanks for your thoughts,

I haven't been to Ecuador, but have traveled extensively throughout Peru -- including alone in neighborhoods I really shouldn't have visited. During the day, simply keep your camera with you at all times. I like to wrap the strap around my wrist to slow down a grab-and-run thief.

I have carried both expensive cameras and video cameras and am always paranoid about losing something. For that reason, nothing leaves my sight when I am out. I also wrap the strap around anything available eating and sometimes just leave it hanging from my neck.

To be honest, though, I have never felt anyone was interested in stealing my equipment. I understand Ecuador is comparable to Peru in terms of safety -- maybe even a little safer. Though I am careful, I don't worry much and would never let it keep me from enjoying th trip.

Just keep it with you at all times and be always be aware of your surroundings.

Thanks Phil - That's what I wanted to hear!
I have an awesome Kata SLR backpack (doesn't look like a camera bag)
Has a good strap too.
