I Just Bought a Digital Rebel
OK... actually, I just bought a Digital Rebel for my wife. This is our first real exposure to digital, and would love to hear any tips/tricks/tutorials/etc. you may know of.
Also, we're looking for a good zoom lens in the 55-300 range, as well as a good flash unit. Any recommendations? Thanks! Rick |
While you can get Canon's 75-300mm USM lens for $300ish, if you have some extra money, consider these...
Canon 75-300mm DO IS lens $1300us http://www.dpreview.com/news/0401/04...non70300do.asp Canon 28-300mm L series IS lens $2500us http://www.dpreview.com/news/0401/04...non28300is.asp Don't forget the Digital Rebel's 1.5x multiplier will turn these into 112-450mm and 42-450mm lenses, respectively. |
go with canons 550 ex flash unit...

I just took a trip to DC this weekend- finally took some decent shots w/ my new 10D (w/ 28-135IS) I'll post some later tonight if I get a chance. But, yeah, if you *don't* have the cashflow for the awesome L lenses the 28-135 is a decent starter lense for around $400 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=149629&is=USA |

I recommend the Canon 420ex flash for the 10D since it takes full advantage of all seven autofocus points but I'm not sure the Digital Rebel will be the same. I had a Digital Rebel but only for a month before upgrading to the 10D. Here is my past Digital Rebel with the 28-135mm IS lens. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2002-...Picture191.jpg |
Thanks for the recommendations. I picked up the 550EX Speedlite last night, and as soon as B&H reopens from their Passover holiday, I'll be ordering the 28-135 lens. I'd love to get the L series, but finances dictate otherwise.

Great- let us know how it works out for you. Especially the 550ex, I've been pining over picking one up along with a vertical battery grip and extra battery.... but I just shelled out a bunch of money to upgrade my video gear (PD-170, VX2100, wireless system, etc).

I did the same thing. My wife got the Rebel and I got a DVX100A. Of course, now she expects to get $2000 worth of accessories since my camera was much more expensive.

I would have liked to have the extra power of the 550ex but the 420ex is a better match (IMO) to the 10D.
I will reccomend the Stofen Omni-Bounce available for both the 420ex and 550ex for about $17 at B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...u=89908&is=REG http://www.stofen.com |
Im thinking about buying the Digi Rebel as well. How does everone like it?

its awesome...
*thumbs up* |
We're really happy with ours. For $1000, you can't beat the features. I just wish we didn't have to dump all of our Minolta gear in the transition.
You might also check out the Nikon D70. It's a little more money, but has a few additional features that aren't on the Rebel. Rick |
All of my students (6 or 7) with the Digital Rebel are very happy with the camera.
