Wide angle lens suggestions for FS-5.

Hello all ,
Last year I acquired a mint FS -5 with only 20 hrs on it , so decided to upgrade from my HXR-NX3 , which I still use for R&G stuff . After much research I purchased the SONY 18-110 zoom , and couldn't be happier with it , and now I'm thinking about getting some wide angle glass to compliment that lens?
I want to stick with Super 35 mm sensor lens's .
The Sony 15mm 1.4 looks interesting, but I would like a zoom and the Sony 10 -20 f4 is very well priced but is it good value and is the image quality there?
Also I notice that some lens's don't have a Iris ring , so are they compatible with the FS 5 ?
Any suggestions and ideas welcome.

Cheers Gregg.

Re: Wide angle lens suggestions for FS-5.

A much overlooked lens is Sony's now ageing 10-18 mm, the Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS. It's F/4.0 like your 18-110. And will compliment the 18-110 well by extending your wide end zoom coverage. I've had a couple of them for ages. They work surprisingly well with both the FS5 and FS7. It gives you basically the same look as a 15-27 mm full-frame lens. The lens is tiny and very light and can be had new for a very good price.

If buying a used one, just put it on a camera and check for accurate centering. Easily spotted when checked carefully. If the centering is off, its focus will be off on one side. In focus on the left side and the right side will be out, or Vic-a-versa.

A good feature with this 10-18 is unlike the latter, current model 10-18 mm F/4.0 and F/2.8 offerings it has OSS, optical stabilisation, like your 18-110 mm. The FS5 and FS7 don't have optical stabilisation, so this helps with jitter. It doesn't have a physical iris ring, so the iris is controlled by the iris dial on the camera body.

If you go to the following Sony lens compatibility site, you will see that the FS5 and the 10-18 mm F4 OSS combo gets the ✔️ for FULL compatibility. Which is important as it means all the lens compensation circuits in the camera and lens talk to one another to minimise distortion, shading and chroma aberration. Just check the camera menu under the lens info. This is not the case with a lot of lenses when used on an FS5.

The first video shows the lens set to 12 mm on a full frame A7 camera. Yes, you read that right. From about 11-12 mm, this 10-18 mm lens can be used on a full frame body. I've used it on FF bodies quite frequently. Crazy but true. None of Sony's other APSC/S35 wide zoom lenses can be used in this way.

The second video gives you an idea of the sort of images you get with it on an APSC/S35 sensor camera. Try and watch this one in 4K to see what the lens can deliver resolution wise.

Re: Wide angle lens suggestions for FS-5.

HI Christopher , Thanks for the reply . I have been looking at the new PZ 10-20 but as you say It's not fully suited and I don't really need a power zoom for it. I'm old school , and the older lens looks better built ?
I have seen a couple in mint condition for a good price , so might look into them.
Cheers Gregg.
