Sony PXW-Z90V under consideration

I'm giving some thought to getting a PXW-Z90V because I miss the simplicity of using my 16-year-old HDV, now on the bench because of an audio issue, compared to making video with my mirrorless camera. I realize the model has been out for several years and I understand the low-light performance of the 1-inch type is troublesome for some. Still, many seem to like the image quality, which is reassuring to me. I also like the compact nature and weight of the device.

How do current users feel about the PXW-Z90V in 2024?

Thanks,

Robert

Robert, the Z90 is still a very good camera in 2024. But if you can afford and extra $500 and accept a slightly larger physical size (which actually makes it easier to use), the new NX800 is a far superior camera in every way that you want to compare them. You will not be disappointed.

+1, A1, totally agree with Doug's summing up. I loved the Z90, but it is showing its age. But as he points out, the NX800 is literally light years ahead in tech development, and the image from these new 1" sensors is quite something. Well worth the extra $$$s IMHO.

Re: Sony PXW-Z90V under consideration

Doug and Chris,

I really appreciated your recommendation of the NX800. Clearly that would be the model to get if I were to buy new, but I went with a used PXW-X70 in excellent condition. My main consideration was to get a 1-inch type sensor. The legacy system, still nine years ahead of my old HDV, provides better image quality and a more cost effective way of learning whether I want to go back to a camcorder to make video.

Thanks again for your comments!
