$7,999. Cheaper than I thought.

Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Assuming it's a must. To have 1080i only with the lower end 4K Handycams beating out the 300 is not going to fly.
Once the 200 replacement with 3 chips and XAVC comes, I'll go for it. |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Sorry to ask that question again, but can anybody at IBC find out if the PMW-300 can do 1080p50/60 XAVC ?
At the Sony UK site it's not in the specs. I need at least 1080p50 full time recording (with audio), if the PMW300 can't do that I have to look for a Z100, FS700r or other cameras. Thank you ! |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Also a question, which type of card should be used to record 50mb/s and above? Considering the 1080/60p with XAVC, should I always use SxS Pro+ or any cheaper solutions?
Meanwhile, is a 128G SxS Pro+ worth it? |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
One of the big pushes coming from Sony right now is XQD support. The Z100 uses XQD, Sony are updating the F5 and F55 to support XQD and I would expect XQD support on the PMW-300 (it's already there on the PMW-200).
I think XQD is a very viable option and it's a lot cheaper than SxS, in the last few months the cost of XQD has dropped quite a bit. The faster XQD cards can support 4K XAVC at 600Mb/s and the slower speed cards should not have any problems with XAVC-S at 100Mb/s. |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
According to this video:
At 1:52 he said that we can use XQD card with adapter. I just checked the price on BH and found it's $300 for a piece of 64G, and $35 for an adapter. Much cheaper than I thought. And it's universal to most of other machines, like PXW-Z100. Nice. Oh yes, another question for this is: is there any lens adapter that I can attach onto it to connect with Canon DSLR lens, like 70-200mm F2.8L IS II? |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
My understanding is that the PMW300 will use the same third party adapters as the EX3, which allow a variety of 35 mm lenses to be used. Look for them at the MTF Services website, or on B and H.

I'm very interested in this camera, since I want to replace my workhorse, Z1u. I have two Nikon D800s that I'm phazing in. So I'm looking to get closer to them with something like the PMW-300. Also, I'm assuming that since Sony owns Vegas, I won't have any hiccups there. |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Today I just noticed that BH has changed their Date of Available from exact 'Oct 15 2013' to a fuzzy 'Oct 2013'...
Anyone have any ideas? Is this a problem of BH or Sony again? Sony PMW-300K1 XDCAM HD Camcorder PMW-300K1 B&H Photo Video |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
I noticed that as well, but they also added all the infor and specs for the camera that wasnt there before,
maybe its a mistake or maybe they sold out of preorders or maybe Sony is running behind or maybe???? |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
...ok I have seen that they have just changed it back to 'Oct 15 2013' again. Guess they won't miss our expectations, especially those who have pre-ordered it already. Hmph.

Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Does anybody know if the PMW300 will play out through SDI when playing (from the camera) clips that have been recorded? I used an EX3 over the weekend and had no such luck. Apparently the camera does output SDI live when switched on in 'camera' mode.
Also, any word on if the USB connection for the camera will be USB3? My cynical EX3 owning friend reckons he wouldn't be surprised if the camera only came with USB2 even at this late stage. Andrew |

Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
XQD is USB 3.0 and 50Mbps capable. (SDHC isn't)
Getting a XQD USB 3.0 reader should solve this problem. I think XQD may be the best option to use with this camera (via the adapter) |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Very agreed. plus it's the cheapest option. dual 64g XQD + adapters don't charge more than $800, while SxS will be far more than that.
Now it's just one day till 15th... will they ship out the things as promised? |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Replying myself... No, they have dragged the date to 29th. How nice.
|
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Now this is even funny, they directly cancelled the date of arrival...
|
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
my pmw-300 shipped today Ill Have it Friday from B&H

Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Ahh, good. Someone to answer the rest of our questions. :-P

Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300

I got it, no thanks to UPS
|
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
So finally I got it. It was working very well and I love it. However the only unlucky thing I have got is that I have found a tiny dust inside the viewfinder lenses. I am wondering how I can clean it up, but it seems not easy, the dust is in the middle of 2 or 3 pieces of eyecup lenses, air blower can't blow into it, and I didn't find any screw to open it up. Does anyone have any clues to do this?
Meanwhile I have realized that I also need to switch to a new tripod. I am thinking about Manfrotto series since most of the other brands are much more expensive... And I have noticed the 502 and 504 heads, with the former being much cheaper than the latter, due to max load capability, does 502 work with the camera plus some accessories like white LED light, wireless mic adapter and others? I am struggling in between due to possible upgrades could overwhelm the 502, but 504 is quite expensive. Should I go with a more expensive one so it can carry all the add-ons like lenses and accessories for later? |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
For telephoto, you need a good fluid head. Trying to do telephoto pans on a non-fluid head is really hard.
|
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Look at Vinten, I have Bogen heads and Vinten is well above in quality.
|
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Thank you very much, can you have any specific recommendations of this brand, considering the camera and accessories? Also, how do people see Manfrotto's bridge patent?

Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
I don't know how to get inside the viewfinder to remove the dust, but once you get it cleaned, you might want to protect it further with a diopter lens. It is possible to screw in a simple diopter lens (I forget the diameter) between your eye and the viewfinder. This not only protects the viewfinder from dirt, but magnifies your view just a bit.
As far as tripod heads, you might want to look at my recent posts in the Support Your Local Camera>Tripod Sticks and Heads section of this forum http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/tripod-s...luid-head.html The problem is one that I have had with several Manfrotto heads. |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
FYI After much trial and error youll find that no aftermarket batteries work with the pmw-300 you have to use sony batteries. Also that means no dtap. I cant go into much detail but I have made one after market battery company aware of this and they are working with me to solve the issue.
Also I noticed that you have to have the shoulder pad always extended if you want to keep a tripod plate on as it covers the tripod plate release, ( may be im doing it wrong) THANKS SONY |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
I know Sony want to sell their batteries, but why do they do this. Eventually someone will crack the handshake codes or everyone that needs cheaper batts will go back to the pigtail solution used with the EX's. It just seems a waste of everyones time just to sell a few more batteries.
|
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
All you do is regulate the pigtail to 12V instead of taking the direct voltage. A Dolgin EX-V-LH plate should be able to do that without giving the high voltage warning on the 300.
Temporary solution is the Dolgin plate, and it looks like they will have to make a PMW-300 specific version either by regulating the pigtail or tricking the camera. |

All the Japanese companies tend to make all of their products only compatible to native accessories of *the current generation*. This is even more severe than Korean companies. This is mainly because of a psychologic demanding from consumers (especially native Japanese) to the brand, which is hijacked by the company. For example, PS4 has just been launched for days. However, all of the controllers, cameras and games are using completely new standards of hardware and encoding, making them not compatible with PS3 at all. If you want to play well and have fun, paying up for more accessories is essential, which is actually against most of customers' will. Meanwhile, their vision is also quite narrow. Whatever they do to Japanese native customers, they want to render it to the entire world. That being said, their skills of science and engineering is not quite outstanding at all. Almost any professional guy graduated engineering or science departments can easily decrypt their 'new standard' back to original shape, it usually turns out that their so called 'new standard' is just some simple alterations of wire crossings and interface shapes. For example, The chip wiring order of PS Vita game cards is just a complete inverse of standard SD cards. You make your custom inverted wiring and put a skin on it, then boom, the games are readable into your computer, then you can pry it open and see whatever inside. Same clumsy trick also applies for video cameras, a simple alteration of wiring can remove all the limitations, then Sony loses revenue again. In Japan due to the ancient culture, the society often emphasizes the absolute devotion to lords, brands and superiors. Strong superiors bind their subordinates' lives under total control. Yet Japanese auto vehicle companies (like Toyota) still restrict their staffs to drive only their own brand of cars to work, or they will be immediately fired. I am not surprised if Sony will do the same to their staffs using iPhones at work, since it must be Xperia series made by their own. Steve Ballmer tried to wreck his staff's iPhone, and what good did he got? Nothing. The companies realize that they can't limit the wisdom of users trying to crack their stuff, so they bring it to legislation using political funding strategies, and hence make Japanese users illegal to alter any key part of the product. Doing so will lead to a criminal prosecution of patent/copyright infringement, even if the product belongs to the end users. While that only happens in Japan, we are not limited to it. Once we buy something, it belongs to us, not Sony anymore. We can do whatever to the product without any problem from any other parties. Years ago in Germany, Sony raided a PS3 hacker's home and seized all his computers and other electronic devices, with the aid of local police force. I bet that Sony never dares to do the same thing in the States even with 10 times of guts borrowed, due to the fear of self-defence rights. Really, don't do it in the States, or the people would have a very bad day. The aftermath of the German was, that they forgot to take away a small pamphlet taking note of all the technical details, so the enraged hacker walked out of razed home into a cyber cafe, started a new blog, and published everything written there online. Yet I still admit that in the area of professional video production, the meticulousness of Japanese people makes quite a lot of their success and hence gains reputation as craftsmen. However, their business strategies are no match of open minded western companies. Cooperation and openness is the key to global success, which is sadly not in their scope of recognition. Frogs under wells. Really. |

Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
I was trying Switronix EX-L96UD (updated version that works with pmw-100/200) They dont work by themself, what battery are you using ?
|
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
I have only tryed thew SWIT Battery because of my need for a DTAP, which it appears the DSM battery dont have. Correct me if im wrong plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
|
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
The DSM doesn't have the D-tap because the battery cell manufacturer had safety concerns over the use of D-tap.
The NEWEST SWIT S-8U63 will work in a PMW-300. It may not have the capacity of the Switronix, but it does have D-tap. |
Re: Sony unveils the EX3 successor: PMW-300
Jack have you tried it with a pmw-300 ?
