Mounting an EX1R under 90 degree angle?
I was wondering: does any of you have any experience with mounting an EX1R on 'the side', so you can shoot 'portrait' (9:16) instead of 'landscape' (16:9)?
It was just a thought: in photography it's normal to rotate the camera, but is it physically possible with an EX1R? Or will the bolts break, because they can't handle the weight/sheer/stress when the camera is rotated for 90 degrees? (The axis is the lens: just in case it's not clear) (And yes, I know video/film is a 'landscape-medium'... let's say I have a reason to ask this: just a new idea is forming..) |

Might be an application better suited to a DSLR which are designed to work in portrait orientation and are far lighter (depending on the lens used). |

@ Marcus:
thanks for the quick reply! Your anwser is what I already was thinking about (using a DSLR or a rig that supports the camera properly). The fact you came up with it without me mentioning it, suggests that a DSLR is the easy way to go. |
Re: Mounting an EX1R under 90 degree angle?
I have a 'Juiced' plate on my EX1 and it regularly goes upside down on my hot head, while I balance it.
Anyway I thought the EX1R had an improved design? |
Re: Mounting an EX1R under 90 degree angle?
I have fabricated a plate and 90 mount with a diagonal support that works with the camera handle so that all the weight is not bearing on the bottom of the camera. I built this for Green Screen work so that I can move in closer for shooting a full length subject and also use the added resolution when tilting the camera 90 degrees. Very effective and works perfectly. Cheers!

Re: Mounting an EX1R under 90 degree angle?
As you may know I do a lot of mods for the EX line.
I also do a lot of custom work. It would be very easy to make a custom brace/bracket for the EX1R or other EXcam. I have a machine shop and an EX1R here so I can easily make what you need. It would not be very expensive, probably only in the $100.00 range. Contact me, we can set up a Skype call and discuss your exact needs. olof@westsideav.com 603.383.9283 |
Re: Mounting an EX1R under 90 degree angle?
A DSLR mounted on it side will give you no more vertical resolution than an EX1 mounted the right way up. None of the DSLR's come close to the resolution of the EX cameras.

Interesting... do you have a link or can you give some more info on that subject? @ Olof: I'll keep it in mind! |
