VHS to EX1?
 

I'm looking to get old VHS tapes to digital. Never done it before and don't have RCA input for my video card. Without buying one, is it possible to capture VHS tapes to the EX1?

The easiest way would be to get a DVD recorder. If you're worried about losing quality, another option would be to get a video card for the computer like Black Magic Intensity Pro. Even if the EX1R can record external video, the Black Magic would allow you to use a higher quality codec whereas EX1R would only record to DV.

I used this device USB VHS Converter. It was very easy to use and did a good job of cleaning everything up. Mind you it was cheaper when I bought mine a couple of years ago. I copied well over 200 tapes without a clitch. VHS quality looks pretty bad compare to DVD but the tapes had stuff on them that I wanted to keep, family events and so forth.

No mention of a timebase corrector in the spec of that machine that I can see.

Personally I use a VHS player with an inbuilt TBC which outputs to my Z1. Then I capture the video in Final Cut Pro as a DV stream. Gives great results and the TBC adds stability to the image, especially where you have LP material that can be problematic if played on anything other than the machine it was recorded on.
