Depth of field explained

The above is only the tip of the iceburg.

here is my drop of water:

DOF is a function of sensor size and f setting. The greater the sensor size the greater the FOV. The smaller the f setting (larger aperture) the less the depth of field (and more expensive the lens).

Eric Pascarelli April 12th, 2008 09:49 PM

Charles,

"Depth of field" actually refers to the depth in a scene in which objects appear in focus. More depth = more of the scene in focus.

Because we use expensive accessories on video cameras to simulate the properties of a 35mm film camera, many seem to think that by adding these accessories we are getting "greater depth of field."

In fact, using standard photographic terminology, a 35mm adapter gives LESS depth of field. Wider apertures also give less depth of field. Larger formats (film and chip size) give less depth of field at a given FOV and aperture.

I think that a misunderstanding of the terminology is what causes so much confusion on this topic.

Thanks Eric. I was about to take my own life. Good explanation.

Charles Young April 12th, 2008 10:01 PM

FOV??? did I write that, Oops, way too long of a day...

Larger or more DOF with A SMALLER aperature, hince a pin hole camera needs no focusing and has an infinite DOF.

Larger aperature gives less DOF and an infinitly expensive lens gives a... I don't know what you call an infinitly small DOF, hmm

I will sleep on it...

Thanks Eric

it was parked on the boat ramp, the tide came up. swept it away, then the tide went down and it was towed out. The tide comes up very high in that part of the Thames and often floods around there. Locals know never to park your car even in some of the parking spaces!

Phil, at what time today do you think you'll post up the review on the EX3?

Phil Bloom April 12th, 2008 10:45 PM

I would say midnight tomorrow night GMT

It's all ready...just need to click that publish button!!

Robb Cox April 12th, 2008 11:40 PM

Awesome Phil, cant wait to read about it... Im sure its a fantastic camera, but from the look of the pics of the EX3, its taken a heavy dose of ugly pills... IMO...

:) Cheers

Could somebody ( other than Philip who's sworn to secrecy) who saw the accidental sneak preview description of the EX-3 tell us what was in it. The article is gone for now.

Brian Cassar April 13th, 2008 02:48 AM

I second Leonard! Whoever have read the article, is there anything way out different from the EX1? From the photos all I can see are the following changes: interchangeable lens / a monitor evf combination with an interesting mechanism / a revamped body with better placed buttons / some additional inputs and outputs / a very useful second accessory shoe placed in an interesting place.

I'm eager to know whether there is the facility to record SD like the 335 and 355's!

Mike Thomann April 13th, 2008 02:49 AM

yes, the big secret is that it's the new lens-less organic sensor technology. interesting stuff. could there ever have been a more anticipated moment on here than midnight tomorrow?

Nope! It is 4.

You have D1, D2, D3 1/2" Digital, D5 1/2" Component, D6 and so on, but no D4.

Raymond Schlogel April 13th, 2008 03:28 AM

From the little I've managed to dig up I'm guessing the secondary shoe is for a new 60 gig hard drive, redundancy or dumping? Both? Dunno.

I read the article. Thought I was dreaming. Out of respect for Phil though I'll wait till he breaks the news. Nigels article was not an actual hands on review. Just a copy and paste of the facts which will be made public in hours anyway.

Phil should have an actual hands on review up tonight....which will be Monday afternoon my (Tokyo) time. Damn, why ain't the world flat.
