Why doesn't Vegas 8 open native EX1-files just like that?

I know, I know ... we have to use Sony Clip Browser software for conversion before but ... that's no reason why Vegas shouldn't be able to manage this automatically! Or is it?
To me that's a huge step backwards. Any ideas why this is like it is?
Thanks in advance.

Good question...
Maybe Sony will offer this in a future upgrade.

Serena Steuart February 12th, 2008 11:02 PM

I was told that it is planned for a future upgrade, but is it a problem? I presume that conversion to mxf format is still required, so would it be any quicker? Already you can quickly transfer the data files to HDD from the SxS cards, so conversion can be delayed until you're ready to start cutting. The ClipBrowser works well and gives you full screen views if you're wanting to sort out the good takes. Cineform will do a direct conversion (by-passing Clip Browser).

Serena, but that's exactly my point:
Why is any file-conversion - to .mxf or whatsoever - required at all? Vegas should simply be able to open native EX1 files, the more since Vegas is a Sony product. Any additional steps are annoying from a user point of view.

I am quite confident that Vegas will be able to open the files directly.

So far, konverting ("exporting") to MXF is not slower than copying the SxS to harddrive without konverting. So its not a time loss to do it.

Anyway, viewing and opening ex1 files directly thru Vegas would be nice and I am sure Sony Media Software is working on that by implementing the necessary patch.

But exporting from Clip Browser only works with the 1440X1080. Is that correct?

Michael Mann February 13th, 2008 11:35 AM

I thought that was already fixed. Is that so?

exports 1920x1080... no problem

Good to hear, thanks.

NO -- of course not ! The EX1 and clip browser are HD not just HDV.

The new version of Edius (4.6) will read mp4 files from the EX1
It's supposed to be released this month.

I've played with MXF and Edius 4.5 - it's pretty good overall

Thanks
Paul
