f-stops?
Does the HC1 and A1U display f-stops on the LCD?

In a word, no. The f-stop is only displayed during playback if you have the option enabled. Something like "data display" (I don't have my camcorder with me to check the menu name).
The exposure chart below will give you the f-stop if you count the steps from the left in the exposure display.
