A dv short challenge for honour and glory. Anyone interested?

Hey everyone!

I really like the ideas behind the DVC and UWOL and kudos to everyone who is organizing those events. But I hate waiting for a new challenge to come out. This is why I think doing challenges for honour, glory, and just plain bragging rights would be fun. Actually doing hands on work is the best way to learn more about your craft and that is the idea that drives this.

We could set it up so that different people will suggest a different challenge, be it a theme, prop, phrase, ect that must be included in the film. We could do this as often as we want or as little as we want.

You have this to gain: fun, experience, and maybe some honour.

So who's interested? If you have suggestions or ideas for this please post them.

Mike Horrigan January 3rd, 2007 01:46 PM

I'm in... I suggest having at least two components for our first challenge. A basic theme and something else. Maybe a phrase, word, or prop.

I would also suggest keeping the time limit fairly low. Maybe 4 minutes including opening titles and credits. That might allow us to practice creating some fancy openings... :)

What does everyone think?

Mike

Gunleik Groven January 3rd, 2007 06:09 PM

Sounds good.

Get it flying!

James Johanson January 3rd, 2007 07:07 PM

awsome, lets start as soon as possible.

Are we gonna follow any rules?, If we followed Dogme rules, it would be something that would pose a bit of a challenge to everyone. It will make things a bit more interesting.

Gunleik Groven January 3rd, 2007 07:19 PM

Rules and basic concepts are good. Dogme can be one, even though it's more a production concept than anything else.

I think props and themes sound fun.

And veery short!

I'm going to say for the first one the time limit should be 3 minutes, excluding credits.

Cool, is there a set time for opening titles? Or does it matter? Or are opening titles included in the 3 minute limit?

Thanks,

Mike

Opening titles are included in the 3 minutes.

Mike Horrigan January 7th, 2007 03:23 PM

So... are we going to get this going soon? :)

Gunleik Groven January 7th, 2007 06:14 PM

Suggest a timeframe and a subject

G

Mike Horrigan January 8th, 2007 07:36 AM

I would suggest a week to ten days... to finish.
I would also suggest that we have a minimum of 10 people signed up before we announce a theme.

Alex...?

Agreed 10 people minimum. The first challenge will be a 10 day time frame.

Ok so if you want in on this one post a comment saying "i want in", post even if you have posted saying you're interested already it will be easier to track. Once we have 10 people I'll announce a theme to get us started. Then whoever wins this one will chose the criteria for the next one.

Mike Horrigan January 8th, 2007 09:29 PM

I like it...

I want in!

Gunleik, I just saw your demo reel. You're far too talented! ;)

Seriously though, nice work!

Gunleik Groven January 11th, 2007 04:33 PM

Thanks -;)

Bumping this to get more in

Nick Harris January 11th, 2007 05:05 PM

I'll be in, as long as the dates allow. If we do this some time in February or early March I'll be able to take part.

Bob Thieda January 11th, 2007 05:28 PM

OK...
I considered my lack of talent, creativity and experiance...
Plus my low budget, single camera set up...
Combined with my fear of public ridicule....and....well...

I'm in!!

Let the challenge themes flow!

Robert Martens January 11th, 2007 08:05 PM

I don't have any ideas or suggestions for you, Alex, but I need all the excuses I can get to go shoot something, so count me in!

Alex T. Hurter January 11th, 2007 08:13 PM

don't worry folks, i'll get the ball rolling with the first challenge. the winner of this one choses the criteria for the next one.

Mike Horrigan January 11th, 2007 08:43 PM

Come on people! We only need a few more...

Of course, I'm going to have to borrow my sisters old camcorder again. :)

Chris Barcellos January 12th, 2007 12:21 AM

Okay, I'll take it on...

Mike Horrigan January 12th, 2007 10:35 AM

Awesome!

So, what are the rules concerning music and copyright issues? Since we're not planning on using this for any real distribution can we use any music that we want?

Or are we going to go by the DV Challenge rules?

I'm good either way...

Mike

Nick Harris January 12th, 2007 06:34 PM

Well, I don't know about you guys, but if I spend time making something such as this, I fully plan on submitting to festivals even after any kind of judgement is made on this forum. So, personally, I will be using an original score regardless of whatever is decided upon for our little contest. Many of you don't have the resources to make a quality score so my vote is to allow anything the film maker deems fit for their musical selection. You can only gain by having custom musical cues for your material, so I see no point in detracting from someone who just doesn't have the resources to make their own music!

Chris Hurd January 12th, 2007 10:46 PM

If you're planning to use other people's music without their permission, then don't even *think* about posting here! DV Info Net always respects copyright.

Marlon Torres January 12th, 2007 10:52 PM

Sounds fun. I'm in.

No problem, I just wasn't sure if it was allowed if we weren't going to profit from it in any way.

So... let's stick to original music, I don't have any problems with that.

Thanks,

Mike

Just got an idea.

What if we had a script (more than a concept, wow!!!) from a screenwriter.

It should be really short, but would give us leeway to focus on production.

It would be fun to see 10 different shorts from the same script!

This is a good idea.... BUT! What if I have no actors and the script calls for more than 1 person to be in the short?

It may really hurt those of us with limited resources.

You guys should consider the Project Greenlight format of a general script with vast openness for interpretation. Although, if you do, you should change the dialogue so it's different, just keeping the format.

I attached it here. Just an idea. Anyway, good luck.

Nick Harris January 15th, 2007 04:11 AM

Naw, I think that limiting creativity is a cop out. Film making is an art with many angles, and many people of varying talents to contribute. Why discriminate against one side over the other... I think that to stifle creative writing is creating a curve to the advantage of those with the best equipment and physical resources.

Clever writing can often allow someone to make the most of what they have, through utilizing mental resources. I, for one, feel that my writing sets me apart from other film makers, aside from my eye for the lens and attention to detail, it's part of what I bring to the table... conversely, you might as well say that we all have to abide to the same shot list or storyboards. Where's the fun in that? My vote is for 100% original work.

Jeff Cottrone January 15th, 2007 04:56 AM

good points, Nick. after posting it, i stopped liking the idea as well.

Mike Horrigan January 15th, 2007 08:22 AM

Anyone else?

Come on guys... sign up! :)

Maybe we can aim to post the theme on Friday...

Alex?

Alex T. Hurter January 15th, 2007 12:24 PM

So as it stands we have:

Mike Horrigan
Gunleik Groven
Nick Harris
Bob Thieda
Robert Martens
Chris Barcellos
Marlon Torres

Jeff are you interested in joining?

Since we're having trouble getting 10 people I'm going to say I'll announce the criteria for everything friday. So far keep these things in mind:

-films will be 3 minutes, not including end credits
-music must either be original or you have permission to use it
-this is about fun!

So tell your friends to come join in the fun.
