Rolling On - An iPhone Film

This video was done to test the video capability of the iPhone 3Gs. iPhone has only a very basic implementation of video. The only option, apart from the Start/Stop recording button, is to touch the targeted area on screen to focus. After shooting, you can trim the scenes in the phone itself.

There was almost no colour grading done except for the very first scene as it was shot quite late and suffered from low light. The only other scene graded was to convert the plane scene into black and white. Video was cropped to 640 x 360 from default 640 x 480 to obtain the widescreen look.

Besides vignetting and some simple editing effects, the images are largely left alone. I also did not use any rig, tripod or stabilizer. Where possible, I tried to steady myself with a tree or railings. Most shots were done handheld with my (not quite) steady fingers on rolling wheels! Yes, I was on my K2 skates throughout the whole shoot.

I feel that Apple has done a great job considering iPhone's tiny little lens and CMOS sensor. The autofocus, exposure and colours are well engineered and I hardly feel the need to grade any shots in post (using Final Cut Pro and ProRes).

The best thing about the iPhone though is its ability to get unobtrusive shots which will be difficult or impossible with a large camera. Plus we can carry the phone at all times and start shooting any moment.

2nd version

I made a revision. Shot more scenes today and made the edit tighter.

That was fun.

I agree, considering it's the camera in my pocket, it captures pretty good footage.

Have you done any others?

Have you tried Reel Director, the editing app? It's limited, but effective. I've done two pieces with it, which I'll get up here soon.
