Wow. I've really been out to lunch. I though Avid protected it's full-version product by allowing only low-quality compression on it's academic software.
Are you positive, Richard? Where can we get a definite answer to that question? Thanks for helping me understand this.

Richard Alvarez December 9th, 2004 01:46 PM

Go to the website www.avid.com and look up the products section. Then select "educational". I'm pretty sure you get a full fledged product, at reduced cost, with NO printed manuals, and none of the third party software that comes with it. (Boris, Sorenson Squeeze, etc.)

Of course, you have to be a bone-fide student or teacher.

Here's the info from the website.

Students and Faculty
Students and faculty looking for copies of Avid Xpress Pro may purchase the software for USD$295 MSRP. Avid Xpress Pro for Students/Faculty includes:

Avid Xpress Pro software for both Mac OS X and Windows XP Professional
Avid Xpress Pro online documentation and product tutorial DVD
Digidesign® AudioSuite, Avid Total Conform, Avid FilmMaker's Toolkit, Image Stabilization, IllusionFX, and Avid Pan & Zoom
One license key (USB dongle)
No third-party software is included
To order Avid Xpress Pro for Students/Faculty, call 800-874-9001.

Note: Avid Xpress Pro for Students/Faculty may be used for personal use or for educational purposes only and not for commercial or institutional use.

Upgrades
With this new aggressive education pricing for the more powerful Avid Xpress Pro software, Avid Xpress DV v3.5 EduPack and StudentPack are no longer available from Avid. Existing Avid Xpress DV 2.x and 3.x EduPack or StudentPack customers can upgrade to Avid Xpress Pro for Education for only USD$99 MRSP. These upgrades will only upgrade a previous Avid Xpress DV EduPack or Avid Xpress DV StudentPack. They will not upgrade a prior retail version of Avid Xpress DV.

SOLD!!!

My friend John just got a GREAT deal on a barely used HD10.

Thanks, Richard.
I'm a part-time adjunct professor at a local university in St. Louis
I guess this is the way to go.

Christopher Go December 9th, 2004 05:25 PM

Yes, when I was a student I purchased the Educational Version. It is the exact same thing except there are no extra software nor any hardcopy books. These books can be obtained however from the CD in PDF format.

Stephen Lemar December 9th, 2004 05:38 PM

Thanks,

Thats a bit more than what I'm looking to spend, or have right now. Maybe in a month or two I'll be able to scrape up enough money for it. Thanks though.
