light stand capacity vs. actual weight
 

I need to mount a fluorescent light with center mount on a stand, so the weight will be somewhat offcenter. The light itself weighs about 5 lbs, so should I look for a maximum capacity of double that? Or more?

I'm an aging one-man-band doing location shooting, so there won't be sandbags. Also, the fixtures will rarely be above head height.

I've looked at these two, and I'm thinking the first is overkill and intended more for rough studio use 24/7. But I'm also willing to pay more to avoid liability issues when I'm shooting in people's homes.

The second stand will be fine, you're only using less than 1/4 of it's capacity with a 5lb light

Philip, at the risk of giving you advice counter to your intent, I can't begin to stress enough just how big a difference even one properly weighted sandbag can make to a lighting rig, ESPECIALLY if the load is off balance.
