Oversized hoods (for vx2000 + Canon WD58H)
 

Hi,

In a recent video shoot of indoor sports action, I was plagued with lens flare . I used a Sony VX2000 + Canon WD58H wide angle lens with hood. In a search on this forum, I found
a nice oversized hood for the matt box for a DVX100 .

Very nice, at least for reducing flare. Has used such a thing on
a VX2000 ? If not, I'll try to make one.

I just bought the Cinetactics Matteblox. It wors very nicely as an extended lens shade. Decent pricing and will probably fit directly to your camera.

Thank you, Sean. I appreciate your efforts, but since I would like to use a wide angle adapter. So, I suppose some research is in order.

In talking with Greg at cinetactics, supposedly this will work well with the wide adapters. If in doubt, simply e-mail him from the web site. He responded quite quickly to my questions.

They also make a wide angle version for the folks shooting 16:9. I can tell you that I am fine in 16:9 with no extra wide anlge accessory lens attached but you will want to check with Greg on whether it is going to be wide enough for the wide angle adapter.

The whole thing is somewhat adjustable in that the french flag can be placed in varying positions as it is held in place with velcro and is intended to be flexible in it's mounting.

So far I really like mine.

I usually just use masking tape to attach a piece of cardboard to the existing hood on the WD58H. That way I can make it as long or as short as I need it to be, and can position it anywhere. Works great, and it's cheap.

I like the economical approach, but I'm worried about vignetting.
I'd like to buy something, but if nothing is available, I'll take a day to make and test one.

All you have to do is e-mail Greg from the Cinetactics sight and give him the details of the camera and lens combo and he should be able to tell you if there are any issues.

As I mentioned earlier, they also make a 16:9 format version but it's very large compared to the standard size. I have no issues with the camera without the wide angle adapter, with lots of room to spare before I can force anything into the frame, and it's adjustable.

Just an idea. I also had the idea of ordering just their oversized French Flag and attaching it with Velcor to the standard rubber lens hood, but then I bought the whole kit.

Why is this post on the "Photon Management" forum?

Probably because it relates directly to light flare and control of light sources entering your lens. ie., photon management.

Oversized lens hoods, matte boxes and the like have a couple of reasons for existing. The main reason is to control the direction the light comes into the lens. The second is to have a place to hang a filter or two.
