Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
copy-that Ken
love using the grid on my trusty cx550v...whatever is in the centre rectangle is in focus...period I'm getting variable results with this new-fangled tracking focus/subject focus. When there is no time whatsoever except for pointing and shooting, I'd like the subject matter which will be in the centre of the image to be in-focus and the likelehood of that happening diminishes as sensor readout size increases. Therefore for video purposes smaller can be better. 4K is so precise and so demanding of image quality that any optically induced softness will be painfully apparent I don't know if that is the reason the engineers of the fz1000 chose to use the high crop factor 2.7 (or something like that) when shooting 4K mode or if it is some technical reason beyond my scope of understanding these things (would not need to be to esoteric to be out of my scope lol) |

The FZ1000 is now officially shipping in Japan through Amazon JP or Japanese eBay

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Hi everyone, so far i am keen on this new FZ1000 to replace my SDT750, but it will not be here in Australia for quite some time, and i think it is going to be at least $1200 or more based on current trends where we Australians are being ripped off with all our electronics gear compared to the rest of the world, so i may end up ordering one from USA if i eventually decide to grab one.
Another reason for going with one from USA is because i shoot all my current video in 1080/50p avchd and the FZ1000 only shoots 4k at 25fps, so getting the US version i can at least get that up to 30fps (not that it will make much difference) Anyway, i found a hands on review and the guy in the review pointed out the rather noisy lens when he was shooting video and zooming the lens in and out. Does anyone here know if this is indeed correct, and has the RX10 got the same problem. the reference to the noisy lens is in this video link is at the 3.20 mark. Cheers |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
You live in pal country so you should get a pal capable camera, you might run into issues with flickering lights when shooting indoor if you use a 30p camera only.
The zoom of the rx10 can be heared while zooming but it's fairly silent, the zoomspeed during record however is ridiculously slow, takes about 13 seconds to go from wide to tele. |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
In the video TCSTV's Chris Niccolls refers to the camera as the "F zed 1000". Makes it easier to understand. Where did this trend come from to state the letter "Z" as "Zed"? First person I heard do it was Alister Chapman.

But the letter "Z" is pronounced "Zed", at least here in Australia that's how we say it. W = Double U X = Ex Y = Why Z = Zed I believe some pronounce it as "Zee" but to me that doesn't sound right. |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
canucks say zed as well...this one in any case
zee zee top is pronounced correctly tomato tomatto |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
It's our North American cousins that miss-pronounce Z as Zee. The rest of the world is Zed. ;-)
It is easily proven that it is North America that has it wrong. A zeppelin is obviously a zeppelin, not a zee-ppelin, a zipper is a zipper, not a zee-pper. In most of the world a zebra is a zeb-ra, except the USA where it gets turned into a zee-bra. ;-) |

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
So is the FZ1000 worth the $$$
I like it from what i have seen, maybe not perfect, but i wanted to upgrade to a better, traditional style fixed lens camera than i have now, and i dont generally like DSLR type cameras for video because they are pricks of things to hold, however, i mount my camera on my small custom made hand held rigs or my monopod, so i figured it wont really matter now, and this camera does have the pivoting screen. What i do want is to continue shooting my videos at 50p over 25p, so i am happy to do this in 1080, which the FZ1000 does do, and i need Auto Focus and and Image Stabilization built in, which this camera also has. The 4k is a bonus, but only available in 25p, but thats fine, i will deal with that by altering my shooting style. Cheers. Quote:

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Check out a timelapse video
I set the camera to aperture priority, F8.0, shade white balance, ISO 125, and 1 photo every 15 seconds. I resized the photos to 1920 x 1080 in Photoshop. There were about 300 of them. Originals were 5MB and photoshopped were 600kb or so. |

No shipping to Australia i notice, because we cant get these just yet.
Will see if B & H has them, and will ship to australia, i am sure they do. |

so, where can one order a PAL version of this and have it shipped to the US?

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
fz1000 arrived this morning and 2 issues
1st the libec 3dv Does Not work to control the zoom so if no other panhandle zoom controller will work It won't be a keeper 2nd the bestbatt ac continuous power supply doesn't work either even though the part number is correct. Another dealbeaker as I shoot for hours on end in frozen arenas where battery power doesn't cut it Maybe not so hot a video camera afterall |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
I've read that in the slow motion mode audio is disabled. But now I've also read that zooming is disabled – is this true?

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
David - there is time lapse which is still images and there is no audio but I don't think there are high speed frame rates. Typically variable speed rates have NO audio on cameras. I think...
|
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Sorry, I'm speaking specifically of the high frame rate options.
I've read that the FZ1000 does: 120fps @ 1080p 240fps @ 720p 360fps @ 640x480 However, I've now read that this is not correct. So, does the U.S version offer these frame rates? I've read that in these modes no audio is recorded - I can live with that. But I've also just read that in these modes lens zooming is also disabled. Can anyone verify that? Thanks! |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
OK, found my answers (partly) in the Advanced Manual online.
I don't know about the multiple high frame rate options, but I did find out that in slow motion mode focus, zoom, exposure, and white balance are locked in when you start recording each clip. |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Biggest gotcha when unboxing the camera:
The hood and lens cap ARE NOT INSTALLED. That surprised me. |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
I just got the camera this week and am thoroughly satisfied. I was going to get the GH 4 but it's nice to be going back to carrying just a camera and no extra lenses. The low light performance, manual controls, focus peaking, zebras and decent DOF are good enough for my uses. Oh, the 30 minute recording limit is no big deal: the camera doesn't overheat so you just begin recording again after a couple of seconds of the camera reaching the 30 minute mark.
One set back: I recorded a 35 minute video (4K mp4) but the camera breaks it up in 4 gig chunks every 6 minutes. With AVCHD footage, I use Sony Vegas' Device Explorer to join the 4 gig segments together. Unfortunately, that route doesn't work with the 4K mp4 files. I captured the files with the supplied Panasonic software but it too doesn't join the segments together. Any suggestions on alternatives to joining the 4 gig segments together? |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
....nevermind.....I was testing it with one 4 gig clip at a time. When I drag in the entire group of clips at once, Vegas automatically generates a transition between each clip and plays the entire event ok. So all is good!

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
I've been looking at the Panasonic sales leaflet (with the help of a magnifying glass).
It seems to say or imply that there is no image stabilisation ("O.I.S.") when the camera is in 4K mode. Is this so? Important facility for me who would tend to use the camera hand held at the longer end of the zoom range. Ron |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Ron, I think there is no hybrid (5-axis) stabilization, but I do believe there is some form of OIS that kicks in at 4K.

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Now had my FZ1000 a week or so. "Intelligent Zoom" a 2x ETC for those familiar with the GH2/3/4 in video mode works well in 4K. Best on a tripod with the near 1200mm full 35mm equivalent max zoom.
Poor though in "High Speed Video" (a/k/a slow motion) mode where also no image stabilisation. Controls are fiddly eg the same dial for controlling aperture and shutter speeds (shutter speed control a bit academic in video where in "High Speed Video" in 1080p the cam defaults to 1/100th and stays there.) Peaking is good, though, and similar to that with the GH4, seems better when not in 4K mode. My Carryspeed VF4 loupe fits, hooray! The manual a disgrace even by the standards of Pansonic's GH3 and GH4 manuals. Still and video procedures all mixed together. No alpahabetical index. Bloody awful! Ron ps I do mainly wildlife/bird video so have an interest in the longer zoom ranges as well as manual controls |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Well pleased with this little'ish camera. So portable even when compared with my GH4s and their Nikkor lenses.
No live view on my Swit HDMI monitor while actually recording. I use the Carryspeed VF4 Loupe instead which just about possible to use with both eyes. Here's a few 4K clips cobbled together via Mpeg Streamclip. External mike, Shure VP83F. Ron |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Here's my nature video along with some side by side comparison with the GH 2. I was basically trying to decide if 1) the FZ1000 was better than the GH 2 and if 2) is it worthwhile getting the GH 4 so I can still use my two lenses for which I had shelled out some $1300.....
The conclusion? Sell my lenses and buy a second FZ1000! After a month, I really do love the FZ1000. I'm a videoguy and the GH 2 was my first DSLR. I loved the video and photo quality, but it was such a pain in the ass to have to carry two lenses and, on a few occasions, missing my shot because I had to switch from the wide angle to telephoto lens. With the FZ1000 I now enjoy both videotaping and photography again. For my purposes it's the most affordable, near-perfect camera to bridge the photography and video world. Definitely the perfect hiking-camping-travelling camera for me. |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Well I have just bought this camera and the picture quality is fantastic, I also have the Nikon 7100 with the dx18-140 lens and I can't get the sharpness on wide shots that I can with lumix, As its labelled as a consumer camera the video from this camera will beat a lot of so called pro camera's

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Is it really only 37mm with 4k video? :(
|
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Well it\'s similar to using the 20 mm f1.7 lens on my GH2. So, yeah, for the 35mm equivalent that works out to about 40 mm.......ah, I can live with it, given the 4k video quality.
|
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Another few clips cobbled together via MPEG Streamclip. I was using a lightweight Weifang "fluid" head on a Gitzo GT2941 LVL video tripod but I ought to have used my heavier outfit which I used with my GH4s and long lenses.
FX1000 compared well with the GH4s with the exception of "slow motion" and the inability to use a monitor in "live view". Ron |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Great stuff Ronald, Just wondered if anybody with this unit noticed the noise that comes from the camera if you put your ear next to the camera there\'s a lot of noise you can hear it and its also picked up on the internal mic,
Have I got a faulty unit? |
Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
I\'ve not noticed noise Ian but my hearing\'s not 100%. I\'ll check next time I use the cam. I was using my Shure external mike in Brazil but the lack there of the kind of background noise I get at home, traffic, planes, wind, people, meant I stopped using it and relied on the internal mike.
"Ambience" stuff mind. If I\'d been after specific bird song I\'d have probably used the Shure. Ron |
