Well the price is right. Very nice and small too. Still, YouTube 1440p footage looks mushy on my computer.

@Nate -
On my 4K computer/monitor, it looks truly awful... not sure if it's YT compression or what, but I have it at 4K resolution, and it is more than "mushy"... looks like (bad) SD in parts... |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Looking at the specs on this camera it looks really close to the Sony FDR-AX1 ... 4k with only a 1.2" sensor, going to be terrible in low light ..... ughhh
|
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
LANC?
a panasonic with a LANC? there is only 1 2.5mm port so it should be lanc compatible for focus too? I don't see any 3.5mm port.. am I mistaking the specs? is this the first panasonic (ever) with a LANC? |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
With doing 50p/60p at 150Mbps is the same as the AX1 to XQD cards and for $1000 more than the X70 may present an issue for the 4K variant of the X70 though. It would record to SD cards, have 3 lens rings and record 50/60P. Maybe Sony will also go to 50/60P for the 4K of the X70 too.

$3499 seems a bit steep to me when Sony's 4K AX100 now goes for less than $2K. From a stylistic standpoint, the X1000 looks like an updated, upgraded AC-90. And maybe that's what it really is, with a new image chip and 4K processing guts. Methinks Panasonic are trying to make a quick buck cashing in on the 4K craze before the technology (at least from an image acquisition standpoint) has had time to mature and get all the bugs worked out. |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
This is the same concept as the FDR-AX1. Repurposing a cell phone sensor with a 1/3'' active image area to use for 4K. If you're wondering why the footage looks muddy, that's likely why.

Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Very surprised Panasonic posted this video. It is bad to the point of embarrassing. As previously mentioned, it looks like bad SD footage.

Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Glad I'm not the only one that thinks the promo clip looks atrocious... when you are used to the AX100 4K output (which generally looks pretty good on YT), the Panasonic clip leaves you scratching your head... saw several sections with noticeable blocking, smearing is horrid, grass particularly was just a mess...
I saw similar "issues" in the FZ1000 clips, but ONLY in shadow areas, on this clip it was everywhere. the few short parts with heavily blurred backgrounds and only a part of the screen in focus looked almost OK, but on full screens, it looked like "detail" just overwhelmed the processor, leaving a blocky, mushy, smeary, visual turd... I REALLY hope that there is not so much rush to get 4K product on the market that this is considered acceptable "output"... Certainly we already know that the AX100 and GH4 can produce excellent 4K... well under this price point. |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Thinking it must be an issue with one video, I found this equally disturbing example. Almost seems like an April Fools joke.

All the major companies have released compact 4k cameras now except Canon. On past experience, they'll be about 6-9 months behind the others, but their response will be worth a close look. I wonder if they'll adopt Sony's XAVC codec family? |

While I love the competition to keep the 3 big makers (and then there's JVC) on the cutting edge of video camera introductions...deep down I'm glad this one isn't turning out to be a "must have" since I recently jumped ship from all-Panasonic to Sony investments. Still stacking chips and setting aside for a couple X70s. 10bit 4:2:2 from here on out. |

I also don't understand why they went with a small chip like this as opposed to something like the 1" in the AX100. Weird. But it does do 4K@60p....hopefully far better looking than the posted clip! |

Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Somehow I think Panasonic has some CODEC implementation issues... the funny thing is that I can recall seeing similar pixel block patterns back with a GS100K I owned... and the same issues with the FZ200... I really like many of Panasonics design features (constant f/2.8 in the FZ200 made that a big purchasing point for the RX10), but the image quality has been disappointing, especially when comparing it to the other plusses.
I took some time to look around for FZ1000 samples on YT, found a few that looked "mostly good", but in certain areas (motion, and darker areas of a frame), I noticed consistent macroblocking/pixelization - I previously mentioned that shadow areas were noticeably smeared/blocky. Looking at the new promo clips for this new X1000 cam, there's also a weird "poster" like quality to that "motion" video - almost like some odd filter was applied to get a stylized look. I'm trying to figure out how these samples (which we're all seeing as "bad") are supposed to sell a product? I'm with Ken, I wouldn't touch a camera that produced video that looked THAT bad. There is a definite "pattern" (literally in the case of the promotional clips!), and while I'm glad there's competition, I starting to get the feeling that Sony has been easing off 4K after looking at the "competition". I can only hope that Panasonics "4K" demos do not set the expectation of what 4K footage should look like. |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Looking at those YouTube videos, I think the problem is a bad rendering job by whoever edited the footage. It looks like a really low bit rate was used, someone probably just messed up.

Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
I'm assuming they exported with some kind of default Youtube compression settings, as a properly exported 4k image should be tack sharp, I was expecting to see moire and aliasing when downscaled to 1080!
We should all wait to see some real world examples before judging this camera. Anytime a company puts out "footage shot with..." it's always the same old stuff, skylines, flowers, water, etc... |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
The battery is model VW-VBD58 Retail = $199.99. Street probably less.

Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Here is a video done by the camera store:
This video was a review on the LX100 but was shot WITH the x1000. They had to apologize at the near end for the crappy quality of the review video due to the bad quality of the x1000. The shooter said that since its an early version, he will not use it for anything if they won't change the quality and address the issues. |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Here are links to two new samples from the HC-X1000.
MUCH better than the previous clips, so this camera looks pretty good. Cheers, Vaughan |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
They did a follow up video claiming it was a pre-production model that isn't finalized yet.

Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
I actually finally got to try out the camera today at a store. They allowed me to take it outside the store for to take a sample clip that you see here.
It was originally shot in 2160p60 but unfortunately when you upload that file, YouTube will not make a 4K version unless you upload a 2160p24/30 file instead. When I did an experiment with a 2160p60p file in the past, YouTube would make a 720p60 file, 1080p60 file and 2160p30 file. As mentioned, they don't convert to 4K anymore. The link to the Vimeo version is in the description area of the YouTube video. It's currently being converted. If you'd like to download the file, check out the Vimeo one. Other settings were a shutter of 60, Aperture set to automatic, white balance set to automatic and ND set to 1/4. For sure if I had the camera even longer, I'd be able to get better samples. I could have locked the aperture but I sort of wanted to see how it would handle while on auto. Anyway, it seams like the audio might have been set incorrectly. I didn't mess with any audio settings. Their was a firmware update that got released last month that people claimed have fixed a flickering problem with 24p. http://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/.../x1000_na.html |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Thanks!!
To be honest the downsampled 1080p youtube clip looks really washed out and not sharp at all, especially around the corners. I've seen footage from regular 1080p cameras that looked sharper. Could you please upload the original file? Cheers |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
I put the link to the Vimeo version in the description area of the YouTube video.
I'll put it here as well. Make sure you're signed into Vimeo. vimeo.com/114920817 Choose Original. The file is nearly 1GB. Fresh off the memory card. To be fair, who knows if their was anything that wasn't set right. I didn't mess with the picture profiles eighter. I used a 32GB SDHC Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s card. I think the camera tried to say that the card isn't compatible but as you can see, I was still able to record something. It's a big camcorder just like the AC90 that I own but for it's size, the ergonomics seamed fine. It actually seamed lighter than I had imagined. I really must be used to shooting with the AC90 to be saying that. The X1000 is sort of like a 4K version of it. -Edit- Just thought of something important. Unlike my AC90 in which gain is engaged if you keep spinning the wheel after f/1.5, their is a separate gain selector on the X1000. It wouldn't surprise me if the gain might have been engaged. I'll probably go to that store again and check the setting on the camera. |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
Thanks for the file!
I have to say it really does not look good at all. Especially when you zoom towards that green bush the ground barley shows any details. To me it still looks like a bad upscale, especially comapred to the sony fdr-ax100. I did not notice any rolling shutter which is nice, but the overall image quality and detail, even downscaled to 1080p is very very disappointing. |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
I went back today to see if the gain was set to anything and it seams like it might have been set to 6db when it should be0. Not easy to test a camera since you don't get much time to see where everything is at and see if anyone messed with the profiles, to fix it. Would be nice if I had enough time with it. It'd be able to properly test it against the AC90 with optimum settings on each camera in both indoor and outdoor shots. Then post my results online for everybody to see.
Here's a review video I found on Vimeo that someone did. He also compared it to the AC90. |
Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499
I've yet to see anything impressive coming out of this camera.
