Black stretch in camera vs grading in post
For a 10 bit 4:2:2 codec (Sony PXW-X70), would I be better off running maximum black stretch in camera, or leaving gamma off and messing with it in FCPX? Probably 50-75% of my night eNG footage requires the blacks lifted, as i work with little light, and things tend to be dark at night.

Paul,
I followed with interest the discussion about settings you posted in the X70 forum, even before I purchased my X70. The pictures looked good, I was excited. So once I got mine, I quickly dialed in your settings... but found that it wasn't what I wanted. Blacks were all over the place (and mostly crushed), depending on lighting conditions. Contrast was too high. So I went to PP 5 and reduced contrast and saturation a bit, pulled up black stretch... and voila... I got the nice "flat" look I wanted and now I can tinker with it in post and bring it to where I need it. I hope this helps. |
