16mm film length=how much time?
 

I was just wondering if anybody here know's how much shooting time a 400' roll of 16mm film shot at 24fps would be? I'm gonna be shooting a music video in the near future and I want to shoot on film if I can fit it in the budget.

Remember to budget the following:
raw stock costs
processing
telecine

There is a wide range of telecine prices, but to make it worthwhile you will need a quality transfer--expect to see book rates starting at $400/hr of suite time for such a facility (although it is possible to get great deals for low-budget projects).

Just remember that 16mm film is about 50 cents per second by the time you get the master developed. That's why people still shoot some of this stuff on Super8.

If you or your DP haven't shot 16mm before, you might want to try a few test rolls first. I recently viewed a music video shot in 35mm for a first project. Complete waste of money. Video shot in Auto mode would have looked better because the DP had no film experience.

But it is gorgeous if you get it right.

Thanks for the info. I'll definetly be using an experienced DP for that shoot. I would hate to screw up a shoot when that much money is involved and not get anything out of it.

Be safe and figure 10 minutes for every 400' roll. Actually, 360' is 10 minutes, but you have several feet of rundown at the head, and you'll have rundown and slate on each shot, and rundown at the end of the roll.
