From the computer to the camera...
 

I'm trying to record a video off of my computer straight to the camera, via firewire.

Lady luck isn't being kind.

Anyone have a tutorial to share about how to do this?

You have a VX/PD? Then connect up the firewire, put the cam into the VCR mode and run the timeline. You should see the film being played on the cam's side-screen. Hit the Rec and little button linked to it, under the handle. Use a tape with the erase door shut.

Thanks Tom. I have 170. I put the sucker in VCR mode, ran the firewire from cam. to computer... and nothing but a big blue screen.

I'm obviously missing something. I just don't know what.

OK, backtrack. The pc is running the film ok? You see it on the timeline monitor as well as a connected TV? Is the Firewire cable ok? Try another one. Then try another camcorder.

Colby, what software are you using to edit? When you plug your camera into the firewire, the computer should let you know that you have connected a new device (I use WinXP). If that happens, you at least know that the device is available. I can give you steps on connecting with Adobe, but I don't know if that's what you are using, or whether it's some other software.

Did you capture any video from the camera to the computer, yet?

Depending on your computer setup, you may find that connecting the camera and turning it on before you even power up the computer may help.

With most editing software, the camera should just look like a tape deck and you should be able to control it completely.

There are a lot of variables involved that have nothing to do with the camera so I"ve moved this thread over to the PC editing forum.

I'm trying to record what's directly on the screen. What's on the screen? It's a video game. I'm trying to take what's playing on my screen & get it to tape so I can make a DVD out of it.

Is that possible? (not possible that I'm a geek, possible to do this.)

I think you will need to capture the computer screen and save it as an
avi or quicktime movie. then you can use your editing software to print to tape.

Techsmith has some tools that will do the job.

Try setting aside firewaire all together and take a composite video off of your video card to the analog video input of the camera and an audio signal from the aux out of your soundcard to the analog audio input of your camera.

Thank you for the clarification. As Frank suggested, try Snagit by Techsmith. It will do screen captures and save them as .AVI files, and then from there, you can export to your camera. :o)

For 3D computer games, fraps would work.
